Dr. Tina Smilkstein received her MS and PhD from UC Berkeley in 2003 and 2007 respectively. Her undergraduate work was done at Nanzan University in Nagoya Japan. After spending time in industry in Japan she returned to the US and did her graduate work. Her main interests are in integrated circuits and medical technology.
This paper discusses feedback from students on visibility, events to make students (and faculty) feel more visible, and personal experiences on visibility. Efforts have been made, in small and large ways, to show students that their heritage, lifestyle, learning style, and other unique and valuable parts of them are accepted by their classmates and never something to feel less-than about. For other students, we’ve made efforts to show them that it’s cool to embrace diversity through visibility and positive reinforcement and created work that made them have a stake in how successfully all students are embraced. If this is accepted as a presentation, I would like to continue the talk into a discussion with the attendees.
