Jennifer Kadlowec is Professor and Program Director of Engineering at Baldwin Wallace University. She previously was on the faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the Henry M. Rowan of College of Engineering, Rowan University, Glassboro, NJ for 20 years. She has been an active member of ASEE since 1998. She joined as a graduate student, after working on an engineering education project and presenting that work and student chapter activities at annual conference. As a faculty member, she regularly publishes and presents at the ASEE Annual Conference. Her interests are in design education and assessment in mechanical and biomedical engineering. She previously served ASEE in leadership roles in the ERM and Mechanics Divisions and as a PIC-III Chair.

Abstract

Problem-based and active learning strategies are common techniques to improve student learning and outcomes. In recent years, engineering education courses and curriculum have seen a rise of entrepreneurial mindset (EM) in addition to problem-based and project-based learning of technical skills. The Kern Entrepreneurial Engineering Network (KEEN) has been a catalyst for many of these efforts, 3C’s – Curiosity, (making) Connections, and Creating Value.[1] A project for a course in Statics and Dynamics was developed where students work in collaborative teams on analysis of key requirements for a wind turbine for a family farmhouse. The technical objectives consist of drawing free body diagrams and writing appropriate equations for static load conditions (Static equilibrium) and equations of kinematics and kinetics for the blade assembly (Dynamics) to calculate forces, moments, and kinematic quantities. Additional tasks in the project to address entrepreneurial mindset are that teams must research and compare two different wind turbines in terms of costs and economic viability, discuss social and environmental benefits and concerns, and make a recommendation to the family (and instructor) communicated in a written report.

In the paper, the project and implementation and some improvements to the project will be discussed. Results of students meeting engineering skillset and entrepreneurial mindset outcomes and their relation to ABET outcomes are presented. Student and faculty feedback and recommendations for improvement will also be reviewed.
