Abstract 

In the midst of a global pandemic, providing educational access to future engineering leaders is as essential as it is challenging. This paper will detail the alterations made to course structure and discuss its effect on students. The introduction to mechanical engineering course at The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology took a holistic approach to class modifications and procedures. Focusing on delivering material while using the course as an outlet for students to network and receive support allowed the class to remain an interactive experience- even at a distance. The semester project design standardization allowed students to complete an enriching project that utilized course material regardless of their location. By incorporating an online tool for chatting, students could learn from each other, asking questions in open feeds and forming virtual groups. The introduction to mechanical engineering course successfully blended high-quality instruction with student interaction to produce an environment of uniform inclusivity that enriched the mechanical engineering student community.
