Maryam Mobed-Miremadi Santa Clara University

Dr. Maryam Mobed-Miremadi is a Senior Lecturer at Santa Clara University. She is a chemical engineer (B Eng, M Eng, McGill University Canada) by training with an emphasis on transport and microencapsulation technologies for bioengineering applications. She graduated from McGill University with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering having conducted her research at the Artificial Cells and Organs Research Centre. Following graduate school she spent 12 years in the biomedical industry, more specifically in Diagnostics (Abaxis), Genomics (Agilent Technologies, Wafergen) and Biomedical Devices (Boston Scientific). After serving as Kordestani's Chair in Bioengineering at San Jose State University, she joined the department of Bioengineering at Santa Clara University.

Navid Shaghaghi Santa Clara University

Navid Shaghaghi is a lecturer and researcher in the department of Mathematics and Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences, the departments of Bioengineering and Computer Science & Engineering in the School of Engineering, and the department of Information Systems and Analytics in the School of Business at Santa Clara University. He directs the Ethical, Pragmatic, and Intelligent Computing and Creative, Augmented, and Virtual Environments research laboratories, and is a faculty fellow at the Frugal Innovation Hub and the BioInnovation and Design Lab at the university.

Dr. Cai is a full professor and Department Co-Chair of Department of Information Systems and Analytics, Leavey School of Business. He is the former Faculty Director of Graduate Business Program and founder of undergraduate Minor in Business Analytics. Dr. Cai is an Associate Editor of Decision Sciences Journal and a Senior Editor of Production and Operations Management Journal.

Prashanth Asuri Santa Clara University

Dr. Prashanth Asuri joined the Bioengineering faculty at Santa Clara University in Fall 2011 after holding research positions in academia and industry. Dr. Asuri earned his Ph.D. in Chemical and Biological Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and M.B.A. with a focus on Leading Innovative Organizations from Santa Clara University. His research efforts focus on the design and development of simple in vitro platforms to understand complex in vivo phenomena. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on topics related to tissue engineering, biomaterials, and bioinnovation. Dr. Asuri also serves as the Director of SCU's BioInnovation and Design Lab that partners with industry to empower students to discover, innovate, and address complex challenges within healthcare.

Abstract

This work-in-progress paper highlights the development of co-curricular programs (delivered in the form of bootcamps) that provide training in data engineering and analytics approaches for bioprocessing and manufacturing. The effort is a part of a larger project funded by the National Institute for Innovation in Manufacturing Biopharmaceuticals, and addresses a gap in education and workforce training solutions to support the digital transformation in bioprocessing and manufacturing. The primary outputs of the proposed project are to develop and provide content for upskilling and cross-training incumbent engineers and enhance their ability to employ data-informed decision-making in their workflows. We also believe the pilot bootcamp content developed for incumbent worker training may be leveraged for collegiate pipeline development and encourage them to enroll in relevant upper-division electives and/or graduate programs. To determine the relevance of the subject matter at various educational and professional levels, we performed evaluations which indicated that there is not a compelling need to adopt separate content development and dissemination strategies for incumbent workforce and collegiate pipeline development. Our next steps are to develop cases and companion data sets to support development of advanced training modules, as well as to deliberate upon ways to adapt content from the bootcamps into curricular activities. We hope to sustain and scale these efforts through the development of a consortium of corporations, industry associations, and universities that collaborate to support training and education needs related to data analytics.
