Abstract

Abstract Reviewed Presentation A higher education ecosystem centered around learners is essential to societal advancement and effective educational outcomes. Advances in technology have enabled learners to engage with content through the use of mobile devices at any time and location. The use of this technology functionally blurs the boundary between formal learning and informal learning. Effective pedagogy can facilitate the use of mobile technologies in a manner that positively impacts both the teaching and learning experience for students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. This increase in flexibility and accessibility allows students the opportunity to pursue their education while also developing an identity as an engineering professional. The initial efforts of a two-year quasi-experimental mixed methods research study are reported in this poster. This study utilizes a technology-enhanced curriculum compounded with mobile devices (iPad and Pencil), and aims to improve student learning in a thermal-fluids course that is foundational to engineering undergraduates. The following research questions will be addressed: (1) Does the use of mobile devices facilitate engagement with the content of a thermal-fluid science course? (2) Does the use of mobile devices increase students' understanding of complex concepts in a thermal-fluid science course? (3) What is the student perspective of using mobile technology to solve real-life problems? This presentation provides a high level overview of the research plan, as well as the current research efforts and some results.
