The author is a Teaching Associate Professor at North Carolina State University in the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department. She teaches undergraduate courses in the thermal-fluid sciences. She is the course coordinator for Thermodynamics I and has taught the course in the traditional lecture and flipped formats.
The shift to remote learning necessitated by the Covid-19 pandemic gave rise to new educational learning methods. Starting in 2020 and for an extended period of time, students were unable to attend class in person and relied on virtual learning. At North Carolina State University, Panopto has been used since 2021 as a video management system allowing instructors to record lectures live and post them for student to watch later. Despite mandates being lifted, and students returning to class, students routinely ask for lecture videos to continue being posted to aid in study and reinforce comprehension. This study looks at the effectiveness of Panopto through the lens of engagement interaction with the videos.
This research looks at four semesters of an undergraduate Thermodynamics course at NC State University. These semesters are after restrictions were lifted and face-to-face instruction was allowed to resume with face-covering mandates. During this period, attendance was optional to accommodate students' varying comfort levels and safety concerns. Panopto analytics were analyzed for the following semesters: Fall 2021, Fall 2022, Spring 2022, and Fall 2023.
Using Panopto, the viewing habits of students during each semester were analyzed. The data indicates when the lecture was accessed and how much of each lecture was viewed. The results of the analysis suggest that using Panopto has a positive impact on learning engagement and overall performance outcomes. It provides students and teachers a platform to expand learning to suit the needs of all students. The feedback from the analytics allows instructors to tailor the content to the specific needs of the students to accommodate their learning styles and preferences.
