Joint US/Vietnam Engineering Education Programs

The opportunity for student exchange programs between engineering schools in the United States and Vietnam now exits. An agreement to establish such a program involving students from California State University, Sacramento and the Vietnam National University, HCM City, has been signed and is in the process of implementation. It will initially involve Vietnamese students in the College of Engineering and Computer Science at Vietnam National University, HCM City doing their first two years of study in Vietnam and then transferring to CSU, Sacramento, for their final two years. Details of curriculum, teaching coordination, quality oversight, financing and administration are described.

California State University, Sacramento, and Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City have agreed to establish a student exchange program involving Vietnamese students from their college of Engineering and Computer Science. The program will be modeled after an existing “Twinning Program “:” that Vietnam National University has with the University of Tasmania in Australia.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City, previously called “Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology”, was founded in 1957, and is one of three universities of technology in Vietnam. The other two are located in Hanoi and Danang. It has approximately 550 teaching staff, including 95 with doctoral degrees and approximately 11,000 students, of which 7,500 are full time. There are 8 faculties including Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and 9 research centers. Both undergraduates and graduate degrees are offered, including the doctorate.

Since 1993-94, the curriculums have been using the credit system, with graduation requirements of 140 units for undergraduate degrees and additional studies from 2 to 4 years for graduate studies.
