Interactive On-Line Testing and Learning Utilizing a Hub on the WWW

Abstract
This paper is written to contribute an easy-to-use software, with illustration, for creating interac- tive on-line testing and learning utilizing a hub on the World Wide Web. The software is seg- mented into eight program files, where the first two are subject specific while the other six are universal. The two subject specific program files are used by an instructor to create a gateway web page and to input data to create a testing and learning module. The six universal program files are kept at a web site that serves as the hub for public access. Beginning instructors can readily create modules for testing and learning by directly modifying the two subject specific program files in their own locations and simply linking to the universal program files kept at the hub.
I. Introduction
The World Wide Web (WWW) is a very powerful tool for communication. Generally, the WWW is an environment where any information created is accessible on demand, anytime, and any- where. It is increasingly used by organizations and individuals for various purposes. In educa- tion, it is capable of allowing on-demand access to any additional helpful information for a given course or for tutoring, which an instructor provides at a web site. The WWW can have a great impact on the teaching of high enrollment courses as well as distance learning. Increasing efforts to create on-line educational modules on the WWW clearly point to the trend of using web publication as an alternative mode in modern education.1-9
It is the purpose of this paper to present the essential software that uses PERL and CGI script- ing10 to manipulate input data to readily create modules for interactive on-line testing and learning. The software consists of the following eight related program files: (a) Two subject specific program files: test.html and test#.dat. (b) Six universal program files: temp.dat, cgi-lib.pl, webget.pl, testhub.cgi, hub1.cgi, and hub2.cgi.
With this setup, beginning instructors can readily create modules for testing and learning by di- rectly modifying the two subject specific program files in their own locations and simply linking to the universal program files kept at the hub. The file temp.dat is initial just a blank file to be used later as a scratch by other programs at the hub. We acknowledge Steven E.
