days.Questions on many people’s minds included: Why was there a blackout? What caused it?Those were difficult questions to answer for the general public simply because many of thepeople asking the questions do not know from where the majority of our electricity comes.Almost everyone with a degree in mechanical engineering does have an idea how the majority ofthe electricity in the U.S. is generated. Unfortunately many mechanical engineering graduateshave only a vague idea. Nonetheless, each mechanical engineer, when they were a studentwas required to learn something about the thermodynamic cycle (known as the Rankine Cycle)that uses steam to produce the majority of the electricity in the U.S. For many, this was simply apencil-and-paper exercise. While

differs from the Waterfall model in that “Proceedings of the 2005 American Society for Engineering Education Annual Conference & Exposition Copyright © 2005, American Society for Engineering Education”it allows the developer to redefine requirements and catch project errors throughout the entiredevelopment of each portion or release of the project. The Iterative process model adapts well tochanges in requirements the end user is likely to request. The Iterative Development model ismore frequently used in the business world than the Waterfall model. An internship can provide astudent with experience and understanding of this model1,2.The creation of the Virtual Demonstration Garden website exposed us to the

Dr. Michael Cronin, Professor,Speech Communication at Radford University in Virginia states that “Burnout is a loss of will, motivation, idealism, moral purpose or commitment at work.”3 People may have a measureddegree of disconnection from their job brought on by constant work overload. When a personperceives that there is high degree of failure related to their job, increased stress

career plan beyond obtaining my engineering degree. I knew that a career in engineering would be interesting and challenging and I could make good money. Most likely I never dreamed beyond that because I didn’t have any women role models in engineering and wasn’t aware of any women in top-level positions in engineering. I do think maybe that kept me from developing a career plan and dreaming further.Furthermore, another participant who did not have a career plan explained, When I started my career there were so many opportunities and I didn’t want to limit myself by having an end state in mind. My parents encouraged me to do whatever made me happy and that was the kind of path that I took. The job

, studentsinvolved in PBL are required to seek out the information they need to solve one to severalwell planned problems presented to them. PBL is commonly used for medical schooleducation and for chemical engineering education at McMaster(http://chemeng.mcmaster.ca/pbl) and is being promoted by the National ScienceFoundation at the University of Delaware (http://www.udel.edu/pbl) and SamfordUniversity (http://www.samford.edu/pbl). Currently there are only a limited number ofreports of using PBL for chemical engineering education, though Bucknell University hasused the method for at least several years. There are numerous websites touting the use of Page
