Paper ID #35043Time-Based Door Access Control System Capstone Senior Design ProjectDrew Battison, Ohio Northern University I am a Computer Science senior at Ohio Northern University, creating a prototype time-based door access control system as a Capstone Senior Design Project. During my team’s Capstone Project, I have been the active leader. I also am in charge of the database portion of the project, along with integrating it into the created web pages and hardware code.Adam Cook, Ohio Northern University Senior computer science major from Ohio NorthernMr. Mason Williams, Ohio Northern University I am a senior at

Capstone Design [5,6]. The use of entrepreneurial mindset can bemapped to ABET student outcomes and enhance learning with what are known as the 3C’s –Curiosity, (making) Connections, and Creating Value [1,7].In an effort to enhance Mechanical Engineering (ME) curriculum, faculty at a mid-AtlanticUniversity developed a project for use in undergraduate engineering courses. The purpose ofthis paper is to 1) describe the development and implementation of a project for use inundergraduate Statics and Dynamics courses, 2) describe the engineering skillset andentrepreneurial mindset outcomes for the students, 3) provide student and faculty feedback, and4) offer recommendations for improvement and adaptation.MethodsFaculty developed a project based with

design, simulation, iterative redesign andsimulation to meet the goals, and implementation details on hardware with software. The wholeprocess, design tradeoffs and history are kept in the final project document folder. In addition tointellectual property /commercialization of the final product, the integration of all the conceptslearnt in the curriculum is considered throughout the capstone design course. The projects areevaluated by a number of multidisciplinary faculty, fellow students and the instructors. The studentoutcomes and design criteria are considered in the evaluation. Later the design and software aremade public as Open source. Full documentation for the interface is also submitted in the finalproject report. Some of the recent

intoan analysis step. While this analysis is not the topic of the paper, a logical next step is to take thedata, move it to a cloud service and use techniques of the various software vendors for analysis.Siemens has MindSphere as a software platform for this step. The lab experiences outlined are able to be used in a number of courses. The goal is that they beable to be quickly stored and retrieved so that one lab is not tied to one course indefinitely andthat they are less expensive and can be used by multiple groups in a lab setting. These lab experiences try to accomplish these objectives. Some are more successful. They haveall been a joy to design and build or watch others do the same. Some originally were the productof capstone groups. Some

student’s education, that ofcommunication. Long before ABET made it a point that had to be addressed, instruction inwriting and oral production were included in multiple courses. Students practiced their writtenskills in fluids, controls, vibrations, design, heat transfer, and capstone courses. Communicationwas not an add on to all these courses it was an integral part of the curriculum. Short writtenassignments culminating in formal reports allowed students to experience a path that they wouldfollow in their careers. The important element was making sure that this writing experience washappening on a regular basis throughout the curriculum, not as a one-time affair and quicklyforgotten. Over the years, students showed that continuous practice of
