The classrooms arearranged to encourage groupwork, with students seated at four-person tables with individualcomputers and a collaborative workspace [33]. These four-person groupings extend to thelaboratory experience, where students rotate groups approximately weekly. The facultyinstructors take primary responsibility for delivery of the classroom experience, while thegraduate teaching associates develop and lead the laboratory component under the guidance ofthe instructors. The first course in the honors sequence provides instruction in problem solving, computerprogramming, engineering design, and technical communication. Before the pandemic, instructorsused clicker questions in-class to collect prompt feedback and clarify any misconceptions. Eachclass section shares the clicker remotes and because of that, clickers were not used during thepandemic. Instead, Canvas quiz platform was used for questions.Fluid Mechanics Fluid Mechanics is a junior level engineering class. In Fall 2020, there were 48 studentsenrolled. The class has 3 lecture credits and 1 laboratory credit. The lecture portion of the class ison Tuesdays and Thursdays while there are laboratory sessions on Tuesdays, Wednesdays andThursdays

Students whocomplete the course can conduct resistance testing of hulls, perform open-water testing ofpropellers, make inertial measurements of models, and measure the linear seakeeping responsesof ship models in regular waves. All these skills are both fundamental to a naval experimentalistand highly specialized. We instruct students through lecture and hands-on experience withresearch-grade equipment in the Advanced Measurements Laboratory. Students have access toan instructional towing tank, which is equipped with a measurement carriage, resistancedynamometer, and a wave-maker. Recent upgrades include a gimballed mount that

Instead, the course was taught using normal methods andtechniques, except for the transition to a hybrid format. Lectures were performed synchronouslyonline, while field-based laboratory activities that were intended to reinforce the concepts taughtin the lecture were performed in-person. Due to social distancing regulations, instructions on thelaboratory activities were provided virtually (instead of in-person in prior semesters) andimmediate assistance was only available through phone calls or video conferencing. The laboratory environment provided the students: (a)access to a fully-functional virtual CNC milling machine, (b) training on the key operations of theCNC machine, (c) a lecture describing the components of the milling machine, and (d) a lecturedescribing the concepts of CNC milling. This virtual CNC machine was enabled by three softwaremodules: (1) a CNC Milling machine simulator, (2) a virtual-environment display engine, and (3)an intelligent-agent engine. The three modules was running on a single computer in a seamlessweb-based framework, which allowed students to access and run the virtual CNC machining

Because many of the engineering classes at SJSUinclude laboratories, projects or other group experiences, we wanted to create our own survey toask faculty members about these experiences.
