Committee on the Integration of Education in STEM, Humanities, and Arts, culminating with the release of the National Academies report ”The Integration of the Humanities and Arts with Sciences, Engineer- ing, and Medicine in Higher Education: Branches from the Same Tree.” He is currently a member of the National Academies Planning Committee for the Convocation on Promotion and Tenure. Professor Martello is the author of Midnight Ride, Industrial Dawn: Paul Revere and the Growth of American En- terprise, a study of how Paul Revere’s manufacturing career helped pioneer America’s transition into the industrial age, and is currently researching Benjamin Franklin’s printing and business endeavors

program reported greater enhancementof speaking skills, understanding scientific findings, and career goals when compared to their peerswith no research experience [9]. Despite widely cited benefits related to development ofprofessionally relevant skills and retention, the National Academies report notes that there remainsa need for more systematic research into the outcomes of undergraduate research experiences inorder to improve undergraduate training [7]. The report also highlights that much of the researchfindings are associated with 10-week summer programs (e.g. REU programs) and more researchon in-semester research experiences is needed [7].Engineering student clubs represent another common co-curricular mechanism in

social media and other technology? Although the global pandemic made the transition towards remote learning unavoidable, it isworth noting that leaders in engineering education had already been shifting towards a blend of in-person and online teaching components, to provide interactive, hands-on, multidisciplinary, andproblem-based learning in a cost-effective, easily scalable, and personalized manner that preparesstudents for their future careers in an increasingly digital era [6]. Inspired by this innovative approach, we propose to develop a set of interactive onlinematerials science lectures to promote student engagement and experiential learning. This extendedabstract will discuss four ways in which we have reimagined the

the general level of teaching effectiveness across the college.2020 ASEE St. Lawrence Section Annual Conference Proceedings 179Introduction and motivationAs a teaching center, MTEI’s goal is to assist all faculty in improving their courses and teachingskills. For faculty at the beginning of their teaching careers, we provide information, support andfeedback for a strong start in teaching so they build confidence and identity as goodteachers. For highly skilled teachers, MTEI offers assistance with planning and assessment ofnew approaches, or technology, or learning activities they created. Both of these groups offaculty are highly motivated and seek out and welcome assistance. For teachers

overcrowded technical curriculum allows forlittle attention to be inserting a sustained discussion of ethical, social and political issues into thisovercrowded curriculum. The injection of a discussion of ethical issues into a curriculum is madeeven more difficult when professors often defend ideologies and the use of essential categoriesthat are discipline specific and they remain committed to the pursuit of research agendas that areat times beyond the understanding of the students who are being taught and that have questionablerelevance to the careers students are pursuing. A method for teaching engineering and ICT ethicsmust connect to the life world of engineering professionals in the field and to problems occurringin that world and to the lived
