The organization was founded upon the urging of Professor H. E. T.Haultain of the University of Toronto who, in 1922 at the Annual Professional Meeting of theEngineering Institute of Canada, discussed the need to instill a sense of ethics into engineeringgraduates. Professor Haultain enlisted the assistance of Rudyard

to sustainability, bioethics, and health care economics are emphasized. In addition, students are introduced to the conceptsof resource-constraint design, as well as important ethical considerations in the work of abiomedical engineer. Effectively meeting this goals and supporting the Senior Design course wassubstantially challenged during the COVID-19 pandemic, when much of the course contentneeded to be disseminated via a remote environment.Major Results:Clinical needs projects fuel senior design. Each year approximately 35-40 design projectconcepts are developed by student teams during clinical needs. Approximately 10-12 of theseprojects are selected each year as senior design projects. Rejected ideas are typically not amongthe best ideas

All drill (lecture) sessions, including the safety training, were conducted remotely. Lab sessions (four sessions per student) were conducted in person.Students had the option to opt out of in-person classes – in this case the labs consisted ofcalculations, reports, and presentations based upon experimental data provided by the instructor.Video presentations of the labs were used as training tools for in-person students or as

applied to convert resources optimally tomeet these stated needs” [1]. The ABET General Criterion 3, student outcome (c), requires thatstudents demonstrate “an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needswithin realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health andsafety, manufacturability, and sustainability” [1]. The ABET General Criterion 5 states that“Students must be prepared for engineering practice through a curriculum culminating in a majordesign experience based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work andincorporating appropriate engineering standards and multiple realistic constraints” [1]. Therefore, capstone design courses and/or the experiences

However, acertain loss in sophistication has occurred in the experiments offered at the University ofMinnesota Duluth. Moreover, communication is not as good as in face-to-face instruction. hiring of strongresearch faculty which resulted in little to no emphasis on practical application and a heavyemphasis on math and sciences theory [7]. In 1976, Harrisberger and Others, as a part of the American Society of EngineeringEducators expressed that a experiential learning program should support the following: “problemsolving skills, interpersonal awareness, creative expression, communication skills, technicalskills, self-confidence building, computation skills, engineering fundamentals, organizationalskills, leadership skills, planning skills, professional ethics, engineering judgment” [6, p. 7]. Inthe late 1980s, the clash between higher education engineering or engineering technologyprograms and employers emerged. Feedback

” “Provide industry speakers to emphasize the importance of communication skills, leadership, management, and teamwork”The ASCE Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge 3rd Edition (BOK3)3, published in 2019, alsorecognizes this need; it includes six outcomes related to professional skills: communication, teamwork and leadership, lifelong learning, professional attitudes, professional responsibilities, and ethical responsibilities. It is, perhaps, not surprising that multiple generations of educators and practitioners (1955, 1995,2019) recognized the necessity for professional skills in the successful civil engineer. TheSummit participants were no different in this regard. It is curious, however, that these multiplegenerations were all moved to

GPAs were higher for thosestudents who participated in honors experience. Further research would need to be conducted todetermine if the retention and academic success of the honors experience students were due toincreased involvement in the engineering community and the additional skill set obtained © American Society for Engineering Education, 2021 2021 ASEE Midwest Section Conferencethrough the honors experience course objectives. It is also possible that the students who self-select to participate in these courses just have better work ethic and are naturally higherachieving than those who select the typical introduction to engineering course.Of the over-prepared students who choose
