their needs, NC State pursued the development of a bachelor of science inengineering distance-based degree program in partnership with UNC Asheville. The programwould be based at UNC Asheville, but the degree would be an engineering degree from NC StateUniversity.Based on input from the Asheville community and the faculty at NC State University, it wasdecided that the most relevant focus for the degree program would be in mechatronics. Acurriculum was developed and approval received from NC State, the University of NorthCarolina Office of the President and SACS to deliver this distance-based degree. The first twoyears of the degree program were built on the 2+2 curriculum already in existence. Theremaining two years were composed primarily of

curriculum integration among STEM subject areas. The collaboration between engineering and technology educators is an importantinitiative that has tremendous potential for benefiting both. Therefore, the NationalCenter for Engineering and Technology Education (NCETE) has been established.Goals and PurposeThe ultimate goal of NCETE is to build understanding of the learning and teachingproblems encountered by high school students and teachers as they apply engineeringdesign processes to technological problems. The engineering design process plays acentral role in bringing about improvements in products and processes. Technology iscentral to the realization of processes and products. Both engineering design andtechnology are critical to the improvement

of Mechanical Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey, USA. In 1989, he received an undergraduate degree in Applied Mechanics from Chemnitz University of Technology (Germany). After working for three years at Mercedes Benz AG in Stuttgart (Germany), he obtained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, USA in 1994 and 1997, respectively. His current research interests include multi-scale modeling of thermo-mechanical processing of metals, integrated product and process design under conditions of uncertainty and risk as well as remote sensing and control of distributed devices with special

In addition to technical skills, the majority of the courses offered by the ESD at ASUPolytechnic emphasize personnel skills, communication skills and business skills to ensurethat the curriculum creates business-ready graduates. To meet this objective, the ESD took specific actions. They recruited personnel with along history of business experience and an interest in developing business-ready graduates. They then added a set of courses that focus on business issues in ways that are highlyrelevant to engineering and engineering-technology students. Integration (CMMI).While the CMMI serves as the guideline for software process and product improvement, it is alsorecognized as the global best practice for software management and services5 6 7 8 9 10 11. Manycompanies involved in the software industry choose to adopt the CMMI framework and becomecertified at one of the five levels of CMMI certification.Another guideline under the CMMI initiative is the People Capability Maturity Model® (P-CMM®) which delineates what companies do to “successfully address their critical workforcedevelopment and management issues12.” The P-CMM® recognizes that “an organization cannotimplement all the best workforce practices in an afternoon” and proposes a framework ofprogressive levels to transform an organization’s

practices and procedures that are incorporated into thedesign and development process, i.e., a system of checks and balances. Design controls makesystematic assessment of the design an integral part of development. As a result, deficiencies indesign input requirements, and discrepancies between the proposed designs and requirements, are made evident and corrected earlier in the development process. Design controls increase thelikelihood that the design transferred to production will translate into a device that is appropriatefor its intended use. 6 Medical product development from concept to market requires a considerable amount ofknowledge at different job levels. Various disciplines may be involved throughout thedevelopment cycle from
