they needed guidance to agree wherethey demonstrated some independence (3.5 at course start) and this increased to a greater overallindependence (4.1) by the end of the course. The students self-rated skills compiling theliterature, organizing it, and recognizing missing information did not change substantially fromcourse beginning to course end (4.0 to 4.2). While the course did not involve practice analyzingraw data, it did involve describing how the data analysis would be conducted. Pre and postcourse ratings in this area increased from 3.7 to 4.2. Experience writing research articles wasrated 3.7 in the beginning and 4.0 in the end although only two students in the class had actuallypublished a peer-reviewed research article. This rating

we consider the SPIRAL curriculum that hasbeen implemented. ME 1000 is the first of a four-semester sequence where students will beworking in groups and applying teamwork skills to their engineering, oral communication, andwriting assignments. The fact that students interpreted the instruction as meaningfully relevantand also noticed an improvement in proficiency lends itself nicely to the next step in the SPIRALsequence. One important initiative here was the implementation in 2009of peer-assessment exercises. These were conducted fortnightly in tutorials. Prior to “peer-marking tutorials”, students were asked to write solutions to specified questions. At the startof the tutorial these solutions were collected by the tutor who re-distributed them amongst thestudents. A detailed marking scheme was then displayed and the tutor guided the studentsthrough it as they marked the work of one of their peers. Cooperation on Science Fair Projects on Elementary School StudentsAbstractThe purpose of this paper is to show that outside the classroom, active learning throughscience fair projects with assistance from RAMP-UP Fellows can positively impactfourth graders. A comparison of the students’ third grade End-of-Grade (EOG) mathscores to their fourth grade EOG math scores, after they have worked with RAMP-UPFellows on science fair projects, is presented to assess the impact. RAMP-UP assistedfourth graders in 2007 had a 2.96% and an 11.43% improvement in their developmentscale score and achievement level respectively as compared to 1.99% and 3.59%improvement by their peers.
