purposes of soliciting feedback from others in our region. MethodologyFirst, for the benefit of the students, our faculty instructors engage with area industry by organizingclass field trips to chemical engineering industrial facilities and also bringing industry speakers tothe students. Our department strives to provide separate field trips to area industry sites for eachyear in the students’ academic career, and plans these visits for different classes that cover all levels Proceedings of the 2024 ASEE Gulf-Southwest Annual Conference WestTexasA&MUniversity,Canyon,TX Copyright 2024, American Society for Engineering

programs in mechanical (2003),civil (2010), environmental (2012), electrical (2016), and master’s level (2017). All of theseprograms are now consolidated in a College of Engineering (2020). The programs are tailored for21st century needs with all four engineering programs gaining successful ABET accreditation as thefirst graduates were produced. This paper will discuss the process to build ABET accreditedengineering programs as well as current and future plans for these growing and vital programs. IntroductionWest Texas A&M University (WTAMU) is a regional Master’s level university in the Texas A&MUniversity (TAMU) System located in Canyon, TX (Amarillo, TX metropolitan area). planning and mentoring to prepareundergraduate students to be part of the research team.According the NSF1, a PUI is one that primarily grants associate, bachelor, and master's degrees; hasgreater undergraduate versus graduate enrollment; and graduates fewer than 20 science-relateddoctoral degrees a year. Malachowski2 remarks that since 1995, undergraduate research hasincreased in visibility and prominence and that faculty need to be assisted in remaining student-oriented rather than research-oriented at PUIs. This observation is key for the authors of this paperas we strive to balance the primary teaching focus with the needs for research and service expectedof all faculty members. Many PUIs use a formula of approximately 60% teaching (3 to 4

Rome, Italy was an eye-openingexperience. I am studying Mechanical Engineering and minoring in Chemistry.I really enjoyed my time abroad. The program that I went on was an affiliated partner with Tech, called Cultural Experiences Abroad (CEA). During my time with CEA, I took two classes that applyto my degree plan, which has allowed me advance in my curriculum and open space this upcomingyear to take extra classes for a Chemistry minor. What I learned and experienced outside of class was something that I will cherish for the rest of mylife. I always knew that the world was a big place, but on this trip, I was able to see this truth. Ivisited different places in Italy with CEA, including Florence, Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri.Student 2

engineeringprogram.During the planning stages, the engineering faculty established four themes for the project: • The project should be challenging. Students would understand the high level of expectation for effort in engineering classes, while simultaneously being encouraged to solve a difficult problem. • The project should be open-ended. Students would use the engineering design process to create a unique design, with no pre-defined solutions. • The project should be hands-on. Students would utilize the maker space at the UMHB Engineering Design Building to gain hands-on experience with hardware and software. • The project should be competitive. Basing the project around a competition would create a sense of

In thefield-testing phase, the plan is to attach the prototype design onto a university shuttle to track itsroutes around the campus. The results will provide the feasibility of the proposed concept, and it willimprove our community’s transportation needs by providing more efficient shuttle stops on campus. The long-term goal of the proposed collaborative research between Engineering, ComputerInformation Systems and Cybersecurity students is to provide safe and healthy spaces by integrating Proceedings of the 2024 ASEE Gulf-Southwest Annual Conference West Texas A&M University, Canyon, TX

beadvantageous to tackle this challenge in a way that minimizes additional time investment. Thus, weintroduced an addendum to our weekly departmental research seminar series which we call the“Evan & Eddie Show.” Adopting the talk show format, our UT Austin biomedical engineeringdepartment faculty Dr. Huiliang Wang (“Evan”) and Dr. Edward Castillo (“Eddie”) interview theseminar speaker about their journey to their current position. No advance preparation is required bythe speaker since the activity is centered on conversation. However, speakers are offered theopportunity to suggest questions that they would like to be asked and/or to provide backgroundabout themselves to inform the interview plan. After Evan and Eddie pose a few questions, additional

increased significance that electricvehicles are expected to have in the future. Indeed, the sales of electric cars have experiencedsubstantial growth over the last few years.2 The electrification of the transportation sector is critical inmeeting emission reduction goals set by various governments and other stakeholders across theworld.3 Furthermore, the adoption of electric vehicles poses significant challenges to the planning andoperation of the electric power grid due to the increased demand for battery charging.4,5 It is thereforeanticipated that the proliferation of electric vehicles will have a significant impact across variousaspects of our lives in the future. The aforementioned contextual issues serve as excellent motivationfor innovative
