alternative power solutions for residential and industrial sectors. Compared to traditionalfossil generators, RESs are more efficient and environmentally friendly. Due to the relativelyyoung age of these technologies, there is still a big gap between the relevant job market andeducational programs, which call for engineers and technicians specifically trained to meet thenew market demands of these new technologies. The global investment in RESs has gonethrough a mostly increasing trend in the past 10 years [1], which implies that RESs will own amajor share of the power generation and distribution market in a near future as compared tofossil fuel, large hydro, and nuclear generators. This multi-billion-dollar market requires asignificant number of

mechatronics increases, few universitiesoffer courses that can have hands-on experience with both simulation and real-world robots.Fortunately, Michigan Tech offers students as many courses as possible that include hands-onexperience on the curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is evident thatmore hands-on experiences on techniques that follow the current industry trends can help thestudents better understand their job opportunities. For this reason, we designed a new course thatfocuses on hands-on lab sessions utilizing the most widely used open-source middleware, ROS.ROS [1] is a middleware that provides libraries and tools to help software developers createrobot applications. Many state-of-art algorithms are developed in ROS

improved.IntroductionWomen faculty continue to be underrepresented in STEM fields, despite an increase in thenumber of women earning doctoral degrees in STEM over the past decade [1], [2]. Barriers totheir participation include challenges related to work-life balance, career navigation, stereotypethreat, and unconscious bias [1]. Faculty who are underrepresented based on their identities otherthan and in addition to gender are also impacted by unconscious biases. This impacts therepresentation and inclusion of a diverse faculty in higher education. Unconscious or implicitbiases are associations that are made quickly that affect our perceptions, judgments, and behavior[3]. They may be based on physical or social characteristics associated with race or ethnicity

This continuous changefrom traditional ways to using smart technologies such as artificial intelligence, (AI) is what isreferred to as the 4th industrial revolution or Industry 4.0 [1]. Engineering fields used to beisolated from each other and each engineer would only be familiar with a particular engineeringdiscipline, but this has changed over the past two decades [2]; As the current manufacturingenvironment is adapting with industry 4.0, there is a growing need for multidisciplinaryknowledge in different fields of engineering and computing. engineering undergraduate programs have an end-of-program design project, termed capstone project, to culminate the engineering studies. Depending on the program andparticular institution, they may have different course structures [1], [2], [3], [4], [5], [6] and differentstudent outcomes or expectations. Ozkan et al. [1] examines the ancillary effects (both positive andnegative) of poorly defined problem statements, and the importance of understanding the actualproblem before attempting a solution. One accreditation-based educational objective is to document“student must demonstrate an ability to identify, formulate complex engineering problems….” This isoften a difficult and perplexing step for the students, who naturally want to jump directly into

While nanotechnology encompasses work at thescale of less than 100 nanometers, the ethical implications are not small in magnitude.IntroductionTechnological advances have increasingly impacted daily life; this demands close attention toethical considerations. ABET recently adopted changes to program criteria to include “effective, efficient, sustainable, and socially responsible manner” [1], essentially emphasizing the need forethical considerations in engineering and technology programs. Rather than being small in scale, the field of nanotechnology may actually amplify ethical concerns by orders of magnitude. Thequestions of ethics are the same when applied to nanotechnology.Nanotechnology has the potential

This lastfact is the driving force behind the newest 5G cellular standard and the proposed future 6Gstandards that are being driven by envisioned IoT apps [1], [2], [3]. Most observers of IoTtechnology believe that this is part of the natural evolution of the Internet (i.e. Internet 2.0) andpredict that the majority of new devices connected to the Internet will be IoT related and thattheir number will grow exponentially. PBL empowered students [3,4] to self-direct their educational experience by designingexperimental systems for given specifications. It is an instructional method that integratesstructured, new knowledge gained in this course and other courses with the new self-taughtknowledge via solving real-world problems. A PBL-based pedagogical approach [5,6] facilitatesstudents’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills while accomplishing the course-specificobjectives. In addition, PBL pedagogy contributes to epistemological development [7] ofstudents. The three-credit instrumentation course meets for two one-hour

The advance in technology has aided in automatization ofprocesses, increase productivity and quality of final products within different industries. The useof robots within the manufacturing process has set a precedent in the industry in terms ofefficient usage of resources, connectivity and mass production. Since the implementation of thefirst industrial robot in the 70s, robotics has witnessed a rapid increase in use. This is also seen inmanufacturing and in replacing jobs that are currently human-held to improve safety or workersor to reduce cost. As such, more demand is made for people who can design, create, build, andmaintain robots. Industry 4.0 is

transportation, maritime companies have been leaning on economies of scale for continued success and growth, leading to larger and more complicated and technologically advanced vessels. This applies tomost maritime transportation and is readily apparent when comparing the evolution ofcontainership capacity utilized in the transportation of the global supply chain with that of itspredecessors. Simply put, “shipping lines have tried to take advantage of the economies of scaleby operating increasingly large vessels, with the aim of reducing per box costs of each containerthat they handle” [1]. In fact, one of the most recent containerships, built in July of 2021, is theultra large container vessel (ULCV) the “Ever Ace” operated by Evergreen Marine Corp

Still, there is a need to acquire production-related data from the factory floor andpresent it to the production staff. The data collection is done by connecting the PLCs withdatabases through various communication protocols such as EthernetIP, the workhorse ofindustrial automation communications. Anthony, Mahato, Sharma, and Chitranshi [1] havereinforced this claim and proposed architecture for such an EthernetIP-based system. The authorshave used a Linux-based server to collect data and a python program to analyze the collecteddata, process the information, and present it on a graphical user interface. The
