2023 ASEE Midwest Section Conference An Interdisciplinary Curriculum in Robotics and Automation to Fill an Industry Gap Julia L. Morse, Tim Bower, Eduard Plett Kansas State University Salina Aerospace and Technology CampusAbstractDemand has been increasing for engineering technology graduates with skills in PLC-basedautomation that integrates industrial robotics. Employers report a lack of educational programsthat prepare automation practitioners with a mix of technical preparation and practical experienceappropriate to current and emerging implementation and troubleshooting technologies. these men is an engineer, and two of these men are social scientists.Several author team members have experience in systems thinking in engineering and socialsciences as well as experience implementing systems thinking to solve complex systemsproblems in the FEW nexus. These experiences allow us to develop an integrated systemsthinking curriculum at the graduate level.Course StructureThe NRT Integrated FEW Systems course introduces students to systems thinking, with specificapplication to the FEW nexus in Southwest Kansas. Course materials integrate the natural-environmental systems (i.e. water, energy, waste) and the human-social systems (i.e. economic, social, cultural, and political systems). The course runs as a mix of lectures co-taught by

The experimental and model data agreed very well, demonstrating the validity of the procedures used in the experiment and in the development ofthe model.Keywordslaboratory, fluid mechanics, experimentation, modeling, tank draining, orificeIntroductionThe undergraduate laboratory is an essential part of the engineering curriculum because itintroduces the student to engineering equipment and hands-on activities while illustrating manyof the concepts that are taught in the classroom. At the same time, lab is often used to buildimportant soft skills such as teamwork and oral and written

program had on the students, particularly on theirconfidence as a STEM researcher and their ability to integrate into the MAST Center researchcommunity. The program will culminate with the students presenting their results at the EmergingResearchers Nationwide conference, which will continue to provide the students new experienceswithin STEM and STEM research they would not have experienced otherwise. Future iterationsof this program will continue to refine the experiments while maintaining the creative aspect thatallows the students to participate in their optimization. The impact this program had on the studentsthat participates suggests research experiences are an effective experiential learning experience, even for HS students

project for this course was to demonstrate the integration of physics andart in a tangible deliverable, and one group of students studied the influence of friction fromdifferent colors of paint on rolling balls down an inclined track. As shown in Figure 6, thestudents produced artwork while studying the variances in both frictional and normal forces asthey changed the colors of paint, the size of the balls, and the angle of the track. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023 2023 ASEE Midwest Section Conference Figure 6: Artwork made by coating balls of various sizes and shapes (including stress balls and golf balls, as indicated by the hexagonal pattern from the golf ball

of alittle reorganization to integrate these experiences systematically into the curriculum. Evaluationmethods should focus on assessing both technical competencies, soft skills, and leadershipdevelopment.ConclusionExperiential learning and professional exposure are essential in preparing civil engineeringstudents for successful careers. By embracing senior seminars, internships, co-ops,undergraduate research, study abroad, service learning, student design teams, leadership roles, and students deeper involvement with civil engineering related student organizations, educationalinstitutions can empower graduates with the multidimensional skills required to excel in thediverse and dynamic field of civil engineering.References[1] S. thisfield. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) now encouragesengineering departments to emphasize adding “professional skills” to their curriculum. Theseskills include communication, teamwork, ethics, and professionalism, to name a few.Course ProfessionalismAttendance in class is mandatory, as is punctuality. Since these traits are not optional in theworkplace, they are also strictly reinforced in this class in an attempt to introduce the students tothe rigors of being an engineer or construction manager. Since these skills are difficult toestablish on the first day of work, starting them off as first-year students is thought to be goodpreparation for their eventual careers.Reading the chapter of the week before coming to

proposes the introduction of numerical simulation modeling and field-driven designmethodologies to existing mechanical engineering courses early in a given curriculum. Theimplementation of both should be relatively straightforward; the two concepts can be coupleddirectly with existing CAD teaching infrastructure. If adopted, the expected result with fullyrealized learning outcomes is the following synergistic workflow: CAD skill development at asophomoric or earlier level, followed by an infusion of computational modeling techniqueinstruction in standard introductory coursework (i.e., Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Vibrations,Fluids, et cetera), and concluded with the implementation of field-driven design in design-focused classes (e.g

discussed.Curriculum DevelopmentOur goal is to help students to live their academic and career lives with a handy tool – AI.However, AI is such a huge and complex subject that we are not able to cover every aspect. Ourplan is to start from a simple yet widely spread technology: deep learning. As shown in Fig. 1,students will gradually master the power of deep learning through a 4-course journey. Figure 1 Curriculum of AI education at UCADeep Learning IntuitionIn the course of Robotics 2, the students will spend two weeks to integrate an AI poweredfunction to their own robots. Another challenge that arose was how and where to fulfill a newly required studentoutcome in an already packed curriculum or what to remove and replace to add process safety asa learning outcome. The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Center for Chemical Process Safety(CCPS) has long been viewed as a leader in the field of process safety. The CCPS has provideda platform for industry and academia to share information and resources related to process safety.Chemical engineering faculty members that have been leaders in process safety instructionincluding Dan Crowl, Ron Willey, and Chip Howat began facilitating faculty workshops held atindustrial sites as early as 1989 [1

-rater reliability and (3) it is unclear if students can identify eachof these design factors without the aid of a professor. Anecdotal evidence suggestions acrossboth professors and students, that it is unclear what the difference between a “social” and“cultural” factor is, with each course in the curriculum potentially defining a factor in a differentway. Therefore, this pilot study had the following objectives: (1) design a structure to evaluate studentlearning of the five key design factors from both the student and professor perspective, (2)implement and review a set of in-class activities designed to teach students about the five keydesign factors in a pilot course and (3) provide recommendations based on the pilot course datafor an

repositoriesdemand robustness and maintainability, whereas FP languages such as F#, Haskell, and Closureshow their strength [6], [7]. Pedagogies of FP can be found at [8], [9].Starting in 2022, we chose F# as the programming language to teach FP to undergraduatestudents in a programming paradigms class (3-credit-hour). F# is a functional-first, multiple-paradigm programming language that runs on the .NET platform [10]. Visual Studio 2022(integrated development environment, IDE) and/or Visual Studio Code (code editor) are the toolsof our choice. F# has been supported by the .Net platform since .Net 1.0 back in the early 2000s,so any recent .Net releases, such as .Net 6.0 and 7.0, can support F# with little to no problem. The rest of the paper is organized as
