ResourceResiliency NSF Research Traineeship (The NRT) curriculum builds interdiciplinary and systemsthinking abilities to help students address complex FEW systems problems. The report by theNational Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on Graduate STEM Education forthe 21st century noted that current and future global challenges, such as creating more resilientcommunities, present scientific, technological, and societal challenges that require systemsthinking abilities to solve these challenges [10]. In addition, employers from different sectorsattested to the value of systems thinking abilities in the workforce and for future globalcompetitiveness [10].Since 2013, the United States National Science Foundation through its Research

One area that particularly felt the impact wasscience, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, where hands-on learningexperiences were limited. An NSF (National Science Foundation) report indicated around 55million students (about twice the population of Texas) in the U.S. were affected by the shift tovirtual or alternative learning [3]. However, the pandemic

Reman - Electronics and plans to stay on the electronicsside of the industry for his career. His hobbies are typically electronic in nature, but he can befound tinkering with pretty much anything. He has been overheard telling students how coolNate is, but not to tell Nate because that would make things “weird.”Rohit Dua, Ph.D., is an Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Electrical andComputer Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology and Missouri StateUniversity’s Cooperative Engineering Program. instrumentation are power generation, refineries, petrochemicals, chemical manufacturing, bio-technology, food processing, water and wastewater treatment, etc. [2] For example, in a nuclear power plant, the temperature and flow of cooling water is precisely controlled to keep the process in a safe and efficient operating region. In the chemical industry, process control ensures that chemical agents are combined in a specific order, an exact ratio, a prescribed temperature, and at a specific pressure to produce a product that conforms to desired specifications [3]. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023 2023 ASEE Midwest Section Conference1.2 Theory vs practice While trying to

students were presented with research papers onthe negative impact of performing on raked stages on a performer’s body. Lastly, the studentsanswered word problems in groups about designing inclined stages and also considered theethical impact of designing a raked stage for their performers. Students commented on theirimproved clarity in learning the material through this blended lecture and lab structure and werefurther inspired by the activity to tie the lab’s experimental setup to their final project in theclass.KeywordsInclined Plane, Normal Force, Design Ethics, non-STEM majorsIntroductionAt most liberal arts colleges in the United States, science, technology, engineering, and math(STEM) courses are often required as part of their core

programmingparadigms after students have studied OOP.Functional Programming had the attention of computer science programming classes back in the1980s and 1990s. Crawford [2] presented their successful experience at Texas A&M in teachingFP in the freshman computer science courses, and Hughes [3] expanded the importance of FPbeyond the classroom and to the real world. However, with the rise of new programminglanguages and the shift in the industry’s needs, Java and Python started to take the lead in the late1990s and early 2000s [4], [5]. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2023 2023 ASEE Midwest Section ConferenceRecent years mark the next rise of Functional Programming.
