education in 2040 as more accessible, inclusive, and equitable, highlighting the important role of community colleges in making thishappen [3]. An important need emerged, “to put less value on degree and more on competencies, experiences, and skills.” This need was supported by employers’ preference for “critical thinkerswho can apply learned information and skills to become specialists with on-the-job training” [3].In Broadening Participation in STEM: Effective Methods, Practices, and Programs,Wilson-Kennedy, et al., (2019) compiled fourteen case study programs and their high impactpractices (HIPs) that improved inclusion and success of underrepresented persons in STEM [4].Importantly, some of the HIPS are related to Experiential Learning, defined

facilitate teamworkamong university students, enabling the development of their transferable and soft skills throughcontinuous practice while learning technical expertise.Within engineering education, collaborative efforts can augment learning beyond the requiredtextbooks and other materials, proving to be more efficacious than in-class instruction, particularlywhen focusing on higher-order cognitive processes (Bayram & Bütün, 2020). An examination byIsmail et al. (2019) evaluated the impact of teamwork within project-based learning, shedding lighton its influence on individual cognitive and affective performance to complete coursework. relationships between these factorsand peer rating scores in the context of college course teamwork. We used Tandem to collectpeer rating data from 5,322 college students at a Midwest research university spanning the periodfrom 2019 to 2023. Our analysis reveals statistically significant associations between students’peer rating values and their personal factors. Female students, students with higher GPAs, orthose preferring working alone were more likely assigned higher peer ratings, while those ratingthemselves higher in extraversion and task control tended to receive lower ratings. In addition, the multiple-way interactions among personal characteristics suggest that academic performanceis more influential among these factors analyzed. These results

students use rules andstructured processes to come to the one “right” solution. While in many cases, this strategy isuseful and necessary, real life is complex, dynamic, and imprecise enough that it is unrealistic tothink that problems have only one solution. Therefore, students need to learn how to use truecreative thinking. Realizing this contemporary demand, the Accreditation Board for Engineeringand Technology (ABET) 2018-2019 criteria1 shifted the emphasis of engineering curriculum byidentifying creative problem-solving skill as a vital component for improving the future ofengineering and engineering education. Particularly, ABET 2000 Criteria1 requires visualization, cognitive model, communication, teamwork and creative problem solving. In

Table 1 shows the number of Blackstudents as a percentage of the total enrollment in ET and engineering (EN) at the top 10schools for ET enrollment in 2019 as reported by the American Society of EngineeringEducation (ASEE) [1]. For all of the institutions on the list that offer accredited bachelor’s degreeprograms in both engineering and ET, the proportion of Black students in ET is higher than theproportion of Black students in engineering, and for most the ET number is more than doublethat of engineering. The NAE report went on to recommend that agencies consider funding research aimed at betterunderstanding the reasons for

Design Process to First-Year Students with a Project Focused on Offshore Wind EnergyAbstractThis is a complete evidence-based practice paper. In 2019, a new semester-long course projectwas developed for our university’s first-year engineering program that aimed to introducestudents to the engineering design process (EDP) in an engaging and relevant way. Students inour small undergraduate-only engineering program earn Bachelors of Science degrees inEngineering, with a specialization in civil, computer, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or acustom area. Offshore wind energy was chosen as the project topic both for its relevance to theuniversity’s coastal location and because it touches upon many of the subareas of
