DEVELOPMENT OF AN ENERGY ASSURANCE PLAN FACILITATED BY STUDENT PROJECT TEAMS Carlos D Barreiro, Dr John L SchmalzelAbstractThe U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has recently mandated that each state create or updatetheir energy assurance plan (EAP), which describes how the state intends to respond to a varietyof possible disruptions to their energy supplies. During the fall of 2010, the New Jersey Board ofPublic Utilities engaged Rowan University to help draft the state’s EAP. To accomplish this, weintegrated the development of the plan as part of our Junior/Senior Engineering Clinic program. An initial team of five students developed a draft EAP within the 14-week semester constraints.Key

brought in its first class of 120 in2005 and graduated 84 male officers in January of 2009. The second class of 212 men graduatedin March of 2010. This was the senior class during our visit in the summer of 2009. The thirdclass of 299 men graduated in March of 2011. Current plans set future class sizes atapproximately 600 cadets of which 10% to 20% will be women. The first ten women wereattending the academy as part of the medical program during the summer of our visit [11].The academy currently has 318 faculty and staff members; all Afghans. The faculty members allhold a bachelor’s degree, with a few holding graduate degrees. The academy is currently locatedat the former Soviet Union aviation school campus, adjacent to the international airport

period of time, after which thesystem will be transferred to the University. The project is structured using the EngineeringClinic program, which places students in interdisciplinary, creative teams. Students are expectedto individually own portions of the final product, while collaborating in a team environment.Progress through the milestones is monitored through weekly status meetings with a graduatestudent manager and with supervising faculty. Another important dimension of the project is therequirement for frequent interaction with external vendors in order to develop the most accuratecost model for the project design. One industry connection is to a manufacturer of a novelinverter technology, which we plan to incorporate into the design to

projects are under planning, design, and construction. In theUSA, tunneling business has annual revenue of about 17 billion dollars per year (2 billion dollarsper year just in New York City).Figure 1: Lyons-Turin Link Tunnel3Figure 2: Deep Tunnel Sewerage System (DTSS) project4Consequently, the underground spaces can be considered as a sustainable solution forinfrastructures. This paper deals with the role of academia in preparing Civil Engineers withexpertise in tunneling and underground excavation. Section 2 summarizes the status of tunnelingeducation in the USA. Possible contributions of academia to the civil engineering professionalsociety through both teaching and research are investigated in Sections 3 and 4, respectively. Copyright ASEE

Two participants (M-ME-4* and F-ME-3) were given the design task using adigital workbook supported by RobobooksTM software. Information presented physically anddigitally was identical except for the Talk to Jim information, which was replaced with videos ofan upper limb amputee. The digital

dramaticshift means that there is a new need for Sustainability Engineers who are proficient in the broadportfolio of technologies and analytic techniques to deal with renewable and alternative energy. In order to meet increasing demand, Sustainability Engineering students will need to be trainedto design new systems as well as plan for the financial aspects of these systems. In mostprograms, undergraduate students do not have the preparation needed to become effective in theSustainable Engineering field. For example, they lack coursework in topics such as energymanagement, generation design, techniques of financial modeling, and exposure to the broaderconcepts of alternative energy. One of the traditional steps is to create new programs to meet

been significant.Several obstacles have been overcome in the first few years of NMU SAE club’s existence andthe club has been developing into both a successful student organization and a good setting forproblem-based learning.Description of Baja SAE ProjectThe Baja SAE project is described by SAE [1] as follows. “Baja SAE consists of three regionalcompetitions that simulate real-world engineering design projects and their related challenges.Engineering students are tasked to design and build an off-road vehicle that will survive thesevere punishment of rough terrain and sometimes even water. The object of the competition is to provide SAE student members with a challenging project thatinvolves the planning and manufacturing tasks found when

thelecture topic that prompts students to fill in key concepts in blank spaces designed into the noteswhile the professor is teaching. This form of note taking prompts the student to be engaged inthe topic during a lecture rather than trying to expedite their transcription of what the instructoris saying, passively holding a completed instructor provided handout,14 or planning to downloadthe full lecture notes prior to the exam. Research has shown repeatedly that students learn morewhen they are actively involved in the teaching-learning process.1516Per Davis, ―Researchersreport that students who receive partial notes perform better on exams and earn higher coursegrades than students who receive a full set of notes.‖17 In addition, students

sound recording session. You cannot get two or more sound recording to be included in one of these posted files. This is alimitation of the website and web player, not the Smart Notes program. If you plan to post arecording on their site, make sure everything you want to be included in the posting is doneduring one single sound recording session! As an aside, in posting multiple files on the Livescribe website, you will discover that nofile structure is available to help organize your postings. This effectively limits the number offiles you can post to 10 or 15 separate sound recordings. Of course, software capabilitieschange, so my comments may quickly become out of date. winds that could potentially move the rig and damage the drilling equipment. After the oil rig motion problem was solved, drilling could be planned. The drillingprocess uses a drill bit that pumps water down through the pipe, and as the bit chewsfurther into the ground, the water exits the bottom of the pipe. This water that is nowtravelling up the shaft, outside of the pipe but inside the newly drilled hole, carries theremoved soil out of the well being drilled and onto the ocean floor. A blowout preventeris installed during the process to control the pressure build up in the drill lines and releasethe pressure when necessary to prevent an uncontrollable rush of gas or oil to the surfaceof the water. todetermine their own level of success in our courses. Certainly, we strongly encourage andmotivate our students to devote time to studying outside the classroom and offer our personalassistance if they encounter any problems. However, if they fail to take advantage of theseopportunities, then their grade will accurately reflect their level of commitment to the course. For future study, we plan to continue the longitudinal study with the selected courses and assessthe trends on final exam grades and instructor time. Our institutional survey results of allstudents will be analyzed with targeted questions related to the use of cadet time, theeffectiveness of the quiz method, and student preference for the method versus traditionalhomework assignments

April 29-30, 2011, Farmingdale State College, SUNYmany functions (resp. direct port program lines) are actually recoded by direct port programming(resp. using functions). We have not mechanized the speed of coding in this assessment yetwhich is planned for the future.3. Conventional Timing versus Interrupt Based Designs: This outcome is assessed by providingstudents a functional program that uses “delay” functions and conventional looping techniqueand asking them to convert it using real time interrupt or some other appropriate clock-timerbased interrupt mechanism. Many students find this code conversion challenging and first timeassessment results in poor score. The score improves by the time of final examination afterstudents have done
