knowledge and tools from various courses and experiences and modelparts of a professional work environment. There are several goals for the course: • Bring order to ill-defined problems and recognize the following issues in addressing problems: o All problems are ill-defined. o Most engineering solutions are suboptimal. o All design efforts have ambiguity. • Understand that communication is integral to all professional endeavors. Consequently, students must: o write formal documentation on engineering projects, and o give oral presentations to professionals. • Understand engineering solutions in a broader societal context. Projects and class materials are considered in the

in which the students complete a peer review of another team’s design.Peer reviews require less time of the instructor: no time necessary to create the competitor’sdesign and possibly less time grading as the students review each other. The students have likelyalready been discussing their design projects extensively and may be submitting relativelysimilar designs, so peer review may not generate much of a surprise. A competitor designprepared by the instructor or a teaching assistant can incorporate differences from the students’design that are intended to surprise the students. The next sections describe the assignment, thecompetitor’s design, and the common questions generated by the competitor’s design.Adding Oral Communication to a

learning canstrengthen academic performance as well as provide social benefits (Gafney and Varma-Nelson2007, Haidet, Kubitz et al. 2014, Talbot, Hartley et al. 2015, Van Dusen, Langdon et al. 2015),particularly for low-performers (Conway, Johnson et al. 2010, Haidet, Kubitz et al. 2014). Inaddition, team-based learning is relevant to the development of interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills that are in high demand in the engineering industry (Kumar and Hsiao2007). In cooperative learning, students can create a network amongst their peers and develop anincreased sense of confidence, encouraging participation in class discussions (Astrachan, Duvallet al. 2002).In an effort to shift to an active learning culture, the classroom environment

The projects have had three deliverables. A separaterubric was designed for each deliverable to guide students and to specify the expected tasks.Rubric I: a month was given to review the most recent and related articles and conference papersregarding the given project, and discuss their findings and come-up with a five page report. It wasobserved that the majority of students were not familiar with standard procedures and rules thatshould be considered in writing a technical

assessment of these learning outcomes asreported through the Student Assessment of their Learning Gains Instrument within engineeringtechnology programs capstone courses.Introduction There is a driving need for accountability and quality measurement in the highereducation system within the United States. As a result, universities and programs look towardsaccreditation, third party peer review systems ensuring the quality and holding educatorsaccountable. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is the group thatprovides accreditation to engineering, engineering technology, and other engineering relatedprograms throughout institutions in the United States. Aft (2002) describes basic steps of the ABET accreditation
