students who don’t define themselves asmathematicians, but whose careers require what we will call “mathematical intuition” to supportthe use of technology in solving problems and to anticipate a correct solution.The goal of this paper is to describe a project-based learning experience that has the potential tohelp students build their mathematical intuition by requiring them to formally estimate within thesolution process. By requiring estimations, the project becomes open-ended; students understandthat their answers are not exact, or ‘right’, but are still valid. Study on Simulated Spaceborne Microwave Radiometer Measurements of EarthAbstractThis paper describes a NASA internship case study in which the outcome can be implemented ina classroom setting. Through this case study, the students can learn numerical interpolation andintegration of functions in a real world project as well as the error analysis. A tradeoff expectedto be observed is between the speed of obtaining results and getting accurate results. As a result,recommendations are expected for various data sets to ensure fast and accurate results. note that the questions not only help the students find themathematical solution to the problem, but also often ask them to think more deeply about thesolution. For example, students may find that a structure is not designed correctly and are thenasked how it could be changed to meet the desired design specifications. This process requiresthem to not only solve the equation, but they must also understand its meaning and know how tomanipulate it. Background: The journey towards our previous projects started when we came to knowthat a local school had a robotics club, but no robots. The students, both boys and girls, met oncea week to discuss, but could make no headway on how to finance their club. Purchase, operation,and maintenance of commercially available robots13, 14 were beyond their means and capability.We wanted a simple low cost solution that they could easily comprehend and build upon. To thisend, we offered a course to engineering undergraduate students in the fall of 2011. The resultwas a blueprint (for both hardware and software) for building a low cost robot4.
