university collaborated to developthe Summer Engineering Institute (SEI), which targets female students and underrepresentedethnic minorities. Funded by a grant from the US Department of Education, the SEI is a two-week residential summer camp that offers students the opportunity to gain insight into theengineering profession and the engineering educational system through a combination oflectures, hands-on laboratory activities, field trips, workshops, panels, and projects. The programalso aims to provide students with the skills and resources needed to be successful collegestudents. Bridges to Engineering: Success for TransfersAbstractThe Grove School of Engineering (GSOE) of the City College of New York partnered with twocommunity colleges to improve the transfer and success of students moving into a bachelor’sprogram in engineering. Mathematics Advanced Placementcourses and more than six times as many in Science Advanced Placement courses. On the flipside, the numbers of African-American males in both engineering and sports is woefullydisproportionate to their presence in the population of the United States. In 2012, African-American males made up 4% of the currently enrolled male students in engineering according tothe National Science Foundation (2012) 1. While the above statistics are focused on African-American males, there are similardisparities in the educational achievement gap for other URM students; this project will impact across section of students.
