c American Society for Engineering Education, 2014 Effects of Language on CATS PerformanceAbstractThe University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM) is an officially bilingual university whereengineering classes may be taught in Spanish, English, or a combination of both languages.Spanish is the home language of 91% of undergraduates at UPRM. Because of low performanceon the Concept Assessment Tool for Statics (CATS) (around 29% compared to the results ofother institutions, which ranged from 30-70%), a Spanish version of CATS (CATS-S) wasdeveloped. PAESMEM scholars’ valued mentoring practices, thepresent study has generated recommendations for mentors seeking to advance their mentees’efforts in STEM fields. Mainly, mentors should attempt to establish a caring and respectfulrelationship with the mentee. Mentors should also carefully balance the level of structure presentin the relationship so as to allow the protégé to maintain independence while still encouragingtheir success. Before the summer experience, sciencestudents perceived significantly higher (p = 0.0039) recognition from their mentor(s) ascompared to engineering students, whereas in every other aspect of science identity there wereno significant differences by major in either pre- or post-summer experience items. Government WorkplaceAbstractThis paper reports the results of a quantitative, nonexperimental, cross-sectional, one-time, web-based survey on the career self-efficacy1 of self-selected black engineers in the engineeringworkplace—a workplace that has been described as a “haven of whiteness and masculinity”3,p.14and “pale” and “male”4,p.86. Engineering has been a key component of the U.S.’s globaltechnological superiority. However, U.S. racial demographics are changing. , the class was changed to two semester credit hours. Since the first two CSEMSNSF grants, each grant program has been continued with an S-STEM NSF grant #0728695 fortransfer students and #1060226 for native and graduate students. Due to word of mouth about thegood information that the students receive and the suggestion of Academic Advisors, theattendance in the Academic Success Class grew to 179 in Fall 2013 with a majority of thestudents being non-scholarship holders.This large class was difficult to work with and still keep the class a small supportive, networkingtype of environment. Each of the six meetings of the class was held six times to keep theattendance under 30 students and to accommodate the numerous different schedules of

STEP alsohelped her realize that “you don’t particularly have to be intelligent or less intelligent tounderstand concepts. You’re just going to have to try harder.” With regards to interest andenjoying engineering, she believed she would better enjoy engineering since she now had“experience in these classes” and would be more comfortable since she “understand[s] theamount of work” required.
