The REU participants each formulated their own research question, developedhypotheses, and planned the required steps to obtain the data needed answer their question. Thestudents took a public path of question development through the use of hand-written postersin the meeting space. Peers, as well as the technical mentors, reviewed the posters throughoutthe first week and made suggestions via post-it notes to refine the students’ research question andtheir research plans. By the end of the first week, the students had become the PI of their ownresearch program. The TTU faculty mentors, graduate students, R&D engineers, and industrymentors then became facilitators to the student PIs. Rigorous weekly

Georgia.Additionally, the authors are in process of writing grant proposals for scholarships andinternships for students enrolled in the minor program. We are also planning to partner with anumber of universities that offer graduate programs in nuclear engineering to provide ourstudents a pathway to graduate studies in nuclear engineering with possible financial supportsfrom the host universities. The establishment of scholarship, internship, and graduate studyopportunities for students taking the minor creates a value system that significantly helps withstudent recruitment to the minor program and that is critical to its future survival andsustainability.ChallengesThere are many challenges to establish a minor program in nuclear science and engineering
observation. Current progress included accomplishments, distributionof work among team members, and current status of the project. Whilecompleting projects for persons with disabilities or the underprivileged is not unique to ourprogram, it is a critical component to the success of our virtual teams because it appeals to thestudents’ desire to complete the design successfully and motivates them to work through anydifficulties encountered with team dynamics.Program planning and managementPrior to the start of the semester, faculty from each institution carefully organize and discuss the Page 24.873.3course organization, delivery, and management (Figure 1). Two main faculty, one at eachinstitution
off meeting in January 2013 with the joint internal and external advisory boards; both institutions have hosted their own separate internal advisory board meetings as well. The internal advisory board meetings include other stakeholders from the respective institutions. The strategic planning team that includes the two PIs, two Co-‐PIs and program coordinators meet on a regular basis to provide feedback and to hold brainstorming sessions on the implementation of the program at both the community college and at the university. A new website with the transfer programs at LSU is live and two conference papers have been accepted at the ASEE 2014

Members are recruited directly by students or volunteer to facultymembers, who then make their information available to students.These mentors serve as a “reality check” for the student teams, reinforcing lessons learned in theclassroom and offering direct industry advice on suggested student solutions. For example,student teams developing a site logistics plan for a construction project might be cautioned onhow contractors balance access and risk, considering how oversize
nano-concepts merge to create systemswith unique functions and characteristics. Applications in different engineering disciplinesincluding mechanics, electronics, heat transfer, fluidics, photonics, and biotechnology are covered,making the course relevant to students coming from a variety of backgrounds.Technical ElectivesAfter completing the introductory course, the students must take three technical electives.
