: the practice of certain canonical problems in acertain collection of subjects is supposed to habituate the student into a certain way of thinkingthat we think constitutive of a physicist, chemist, or other flavor of scientist. But science alsoventures out into the unknown, past the canonical problems and the canonical experiments, andso students need to be formed in ways of handling these more ambiguous situations where rightcourse of action is not clearly defined. Many undergraduate science curricula includeopportunities for such formation, often in advanced laboratory courses or capstone/senior thesiscoursework. Assessment of these formational outcomes is possible, but not as straightforward asfor technical outcomes. The question then is

related to quantum optomechanical sensors, which was followed by a postdoc in physics education research at the University of Colorado Boulder. Since that time, Ben has pursued research on the nature of physics expertise, how expertise is developed, and the relationship between formal education and professional success. This has included research on graduate education, career preparation for optics and quantum jobs, and laboratory education. Ben regularly teaches courses that integrate computation, laboratory work, and projects. ©American Society for Engineering Education, 2025 Investigating Opportunities for Growth and Increased Diversity in Quantum Information Science and

skills includingreasoning, creativity and open problem solving . The learners experience difficulty understandingthe basic knowledge and skills in understanding physics. Lecture classes, problem-solvingsessions, and laboratory activities deliver these fundamental physics topics to learners. The lackof organization creates many difficulties in the comprehension of basic concepts and in solvingcomplex problems. This leads to the common complaint that students' knowledge of physics isreduced to formulas and labels of the concepts, which are unable to significantly contribute tomeaningful reasoning processes [4]. To address students’ learning difficulties in physics, the subject needs to be made enjoyableand the learning content needs to be
