activityand corresponding assignments described in this paper were used to present new engineeringcontent to an Introduction to Environmental Engineering class.The lessons were inspired by the author’s personal experience with purifying water whilebackpacking. Backcountry water purification methods use similar treatment principles asconventional drinking water where physical and chemical treatment techniques such as filtration,disinfection, and adsorption are commonly used.
