Engineering Laboratory to increase student engagement, learning, and data analysis Case studies are innovative ways to increase student engagement in courses. Usedextensively in medical and law schools, case studies introduce real-world examples that can helpstudents readily see how theory applies to actual events, situations, and the end results. Thiseducational study began in 2010 to investigate the use of case studies in an environmentalengineering laboratory course. Four environmental engineering case studies combined withlaboratory activities were developed for a junior level environmental engineering course. A few of these students expressed interest in pursuinga career in environmental engineering with the remaining having a general interest insustainability. The class counted for three credits with no laboratory component and met twice aweek for eighty minutes. This course was offered for the second time in the spring of 2015, andat that point, few pieces or equipment were available for conducting traditional water qualitylabs. Therefore, the lessons described in this paper were designed to be inexpensive and easy toimplement with minimal facilities. As at many other institutions, this marked the first time firststudents were presented water treatment technologies in a formalized setting.The series of lessons

them in their home and in their everyday life. Hands on experiences areemphasized. Lessons are taught by UAB’s faculty, graduate students and staff.Regarding logistics, students meet each Saturday at 8:45 am, in their respective school. Theytravel in a school bus to each field trip location, escorted by 2 to 4 of their school’s scienceteachers. A light breakfast is served at 9:00 am and the activities take place from 9:30 am to11:30 am. Lunch is provided from 11:30 am till noon. Students are picked up from the school byparent or guardian upon return from our university at 12:30 pm. It is essential to have availablethe following resources to run this program: • Classroom • Laboratory • School bus to pick up and drop the students off

Additionally, individual studyrequires a high level of self-motivation that may not be present in all students. Individual studies are meant to put the student in the driver’s seat. However, facultymembers are not disengaged. They serve as project advisors. Since students necessarily arepushing the bounds of knowledge, faculty members must conduct a concurrent literature reviewto best direct the student and mentor their research efforts. The role of project advisor, from adepartmental perspective, is a duty additional to other everyday requirements. evaluation of an “Appropriate Technology” courseat RHIT, we have had many insights. In future years we plan to be more intentional towardsachieving both technical preparedness and social fluency for humanitarian engineering work. Wewill attempt to add quantitative elements to all qualitative aspects of the course. This may requireus to teach economic analyses for decision making by drawing parallels to environmentaleconomics. To augment, we will also continue to improve our collaborations with engineeringpractitioners, EWB, and aid groups to develop more case studies, particularly ones withquantitative analysis components.Additionally, our dream is to have permanent installations of the project demonstrations on ourcampus in an outdoor laboratory
