. After working in a manufacturing field, some studentsdevelop an interest in pursuing further knowledge in a specific field of manufacturing. Under themechanical and manufacturing engineering technology programs, students can focus their studiesby taking optional courses in design, quality, or tool design.Building a Network of Professional ContactsEvaluation of the experiences of engineering technology students at NKU has demonstrated thatthose students who obtain co-op positions early on in their academic careers have a much bettersuccess rate for acquiring jobs related to their own academic major. As [3] noted previously, industrial involvement in capstone courses or co-op courses has been shown to enrich students’experiences and lend to a

Pennsylvania. While the benefits to the students are vital, the impact of a co-op program goes beyond thestudents. Industry can gain benefit by obtaining staffing for projects at a substantially reducedrate (and typically without the benefits overhead). Moreover, by hiring interns and co-opstudents, industry can develop a recruiting system that allows them to make better hiringdecisions than can be done via a resume and interview alone. The benefit also extends to the higher education institutions. An organized co-op program canhelp the institution develop relationships with regional and national industry. Thoserelationships can be valuable in many ways. For example, at the authors’ institution, the industryrelations developed through the co-op program have

decisionsabout scientific and technical training. The author has previously presented a design paradigm based on a morally deep worldview.3,4After teaching this methodology to several capstone design classes, it seemed important to addseveral additional elements to the design process. That which seemed missing occurred at theoutset and at the conclusion of the process including: (1) a beginning with an open mind freefrom pre-conceived notion, biases and prejudices; (2) an explicit challenge to the designer toconsider the plight of the Earth; and (3) an exploration of the values and purposes associatedboth with the design and the designer. The challenge at hand then is to bring these three newelements into the morally deep design paradigm already

courses. Other applications have included constructing structuralmodels for structural design and capstone courses. This paper takes this use of classroomtechnology even further by demonstrating how K’nex pieces can be used effectively in an upper-division, highly technical structural dynamics / seismic design course.K’nex pieces consist of various rods and connectors as shown in Figure 1. The rods areingeniously sized such that right triangles are naturally formed. While one size of rod forms thesides of a triangle, the next size up forms the hypotenuse. The pattern continues as the rodschange colors and triangles get progressively larger. The connectors allow rods to be joined at45 and 90 degree angles in various configurations. Some connectors

Teamwork skills frequentlyrank at the top of desired engineering skills lists, along with analysis, problem solving, design, and communication,3 and the ability to work well in teams appears in the current and proposedfuture set of ABET Student Outcomes for programs accredited by the Engineering AccreditationCommission.4 Team projects are a hallmark of engineering curricula, especially in laboratorycourses and capstone design courses. Many engineering educators discuss strategies for teachingteamwork skills to their students, especially through collaborative and cooperative learningapproaches.5
