Even if the participants’ first drafts werechanged significantly after feedback from a trusted mentor or advisor, this demonstrates anaspect of discourse enculturation.Viewed through academic literacies theory, the narratives employed by these graduate studentsare meant to strongly align with disciplinary values and norms in order to argue most effectivelyfor the merit of the research proposals. The graduate students are practicing their academicliteracy through the use of both disciplinary language and jargon and the types of activities thatthey perceive best demonstrate the intellectual merits and broader impacts of their researchproposals. The distribution of themes across the broad

feel like I need to be helping others be successful. So, I think my role has been one of trying to facilitate the success of others. For example, at Washington State, I attempted to help younger faculty be accepted for doing this kind of work. Networking them with one another, being an advocate for them, helping them with grant proposals, and so on. So they who had the potential to go much further than I, if they could get the training off to a good start, I could have much more impact by doing that.”Intellectual support, teaching: In addition to supporting colleagues’ research efforts, individualintellectual support can also focus more on teaching or practice. setup and boundary conditions. This greatly cuts down on the time requiredto troubleshoot an experimental apparatus and allows for a more efficient use of time. Since the design project is a continuation of all the past years of research, the saved timeallows for things such as automation and novel techniques to aid in the conducting of the currentresearch. Additionally, side research areas and problems can be developed that, at this point, should be entirely original and worthy of a graduate thesis. To this end, the senior level projectshould far exceed expectations and be at a leading level. Additionally, as there has beenextensive practice on technical writings through the writing of grants and publishable results, thetechnical reports

.5. Multidisciplinary Learning: Instructors can incorporate civility as a multidisciplinary topicassignment. The instructor can develop a “current topic assignment” where students are requiredto research or discuss a non-technical issue related to their careers. For example, the 2016 U.S.Presidential Campaigns present an opportunity for students to discuss the candidates’ leadershipabilities and policy ideas. When considering the controversial rhetoric spoken by somecandidates, civility can also be discussed. The election of a new U.S. President is relevant forengineering and technology students since it impacts their education and careers. This communicationdeepens the understanding of both parties.Armed with university7 and financial support3, and cognizant of the personal and publicbenefits15,18, the only remaining question is of specifics. What work can be done? For those withan inclination to educational research, museums can provide an excellent laboratory for the studyof human learning.
