also one of the first technical courses that ECE students areexposed to. Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) is a versatile and adaptable technologywith many applications ranging from medical image processing to cryptography. By combiningan FPGA course and a digital logic design course, students can learn the basics and beintroduced to new implementation tools and platforms at the same time. This paper describes anumber of academic approaches to incorporate FPGA design in digital design courses andpresents a number of laboratory experiments and tutorials that pave the path for designing asophomore-level four semester credit hour (SCH) course. The results of a survey conducted togauge student interest of such a course are included as

major types of solar PV modules: monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-filmPV. Each type converts sunlight into power at a different efficiency rate, therefore, the cost varies. The power conversion efficiency of solar energy is relatively low, at an average of about 15%,according to the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).4 If modules degrade 10 – 2018 ASEE Mid-Atlantic Spring Conference, April 6-7, 2018 – University of the District of Columbia15% after a certain time period, PV module efficiency is considered a failure.5 The performanceof PV modules over long periods of time have been unclear, therefore, estimation of accurate netefficiency that take degradation rate into account is important. development for secondaryschool teachers with emphasis on hands-on laboratory research and experiences in STEM fields. The paper also refers to the teachers’ experiences gained at the GSU Engineering Research Labsduring the summer 2017. Participants in the RET program completed 280 hours (seven weeks) oftraining and research experience in renewable energy topics. About 50 hours were devoted tolectures and workshops, and the rest, about 230 hours, were research activities, collaborating inresearch teams with undergraduate and graduate students, and engineering professors. Participantsalso developed lessons for their courses that were delivered to their own students during the 2017-2018 school year. The lessons were directly related to the experiences

Education, 2018 Enhancing Engineering Lab Report Writing Using Peer Review Assessment Rocio Alba-Flores Georgia Southern UniversityAbstractThis paper describes the educational experiences gained by incorporating a peer review componentfor evaluating formal lab reports in a Circuit Analysis Laboratory course. In this course studentsperformed ten lab experiments, from which the instructor selected two to have individual formalwritten lab reports. The instructor dedicated about one hour at the beginning of the semester to talkabout peer review and its importance. The instructor together with all students performed a mockpeer review of

integration, testing, and the use of developmentand verification tools.Lecture courses should be accompanied with a series of laboratory exercises and a semester longproject. Theses laboratory exercise will help student learn the basic concepts of designingembedded systems and mastering the lectured materials. Laboratory exercises and projects canutilize popular kits such as the ARM-based Rapid Embedded Systems Design Education Kit orlow-cost FPGA embedded systems development boards. Laboratory exercises and projectsshould leverage proficiency gained from other core engineering courses such as C/C++programming language, assembly language, and computer organization courses in designingreal-world embedded applications.c. Numerousclassroom techniques combine to work towards this goal, including testing, laboratories, anddemonstrations. One highly effective, yet often underutilized, tool for improving long-termunderstanding is hands-on activities that students do at their desks, especially those involvingsimple items with which they are already familiar. Five characteristics are common to aproductive, in-class, reinforcement activity. (1) All students participate, preferably at their own desks. (2) Items involved are commonplace, familiar to the students, and low-cost

torecruit youth into the STEM pipeline by raising STEM awareness and curiosity during a highlyinfluential time in their development11.The technology of remote laboratories also opens up a wide range of possibilities, because itbreaks physical barriers and allows access to them from any computer at any location and atany time using the Internet. In addition, remote laboratories must be used through a computerconnected to the Internet, and this allows the use of advanced features that enhance the learningexperience -- thus richer learning experiences can be created. Furthermore, from a pedagogicalpoint of view, these remote laboratories open new fields of innovation based on the developmentof different competencies and, by involving parents, new

degree students. It is a five-credit course with acombined lecture and laboratory components. EMT 1150 has always been identified as one of themost challenging courses in the major with high failing rate. From the instructors’ perspective, thereason for the high failure rates is due to first-year students having to learn the language ofengineering in a very short time; simultaneously, they need to develop good critical thinking andproblem-solving skills. In this paper, the preliminary results of a new pedagogical approach thatincorporates Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) and discipline-specific literacy strategies toimprove student learning will be presented. The proposed approach consists in a restructure of thecourse material and the introduction

and electronic transducers, has resulted in theneed for younger or enterprising audiences to learn the software used in these fields. The accessof such tech has fallen to specialization roles, where people would defer time to designers andarchitects to develop what is needed. The field of mechanical, let alone general, design will benecessary for future companies and businesses, or even for printing laboratory equipment, as theprocesses and science respectively catches up to the industry. However, whilst the science, math, and engineering components are catching up, thetechnological side is faltering. More time and effort is being pressed onto designers, and the fieldhas pushed forward to where the design work is brought upon those

onlineavailability of energy data. Since MGH is split into a campus of buildings of different size andenergy use, the project will focus specifically on the MGH Gray Building (332,664 sq-ft). TheGray Building is an inpatient care facility, and its space types include exam rooms, treatmentrooms, procedure rooms, operating rooms, research laboratory space, patient rooms, and manyother areas11.The rest of this paper is organized as follows. In Section II, the different types of geothermalsystems are discussed as well as the type of system that should be used for the MGH, it’s costs formaintenance and implementation, and its payoff. Finally, the conclusions are provided in SectionIII.II. StudyMGH Energy UsageThe MGH energy data shows that the majority of energy

, private cloud, public cloud, online learning.IntroductionLearning by doing is important for engineering and technology education. Cloud computingleverages efficient sharing of on-demand, self-managed, virtual infrastructures, allowing swiftdeployment and adaptation of curriculum and laboratory experiences in step with the advances inthe field. Adoption of cloud computing technologies is a clear trend in online learning.1,2 Someeducators have used cloud technologies for years. Others are still exploring ways of incorporatingcloud computing in teaching and learning. There are many different approaches of implementingcloud computing.2,3 For educators with little experience in cloud computing deployment, selectinga suitable cloud platform to use can
