behind an energy transformation project underway in an undergraduateEngineering Technology program. The goal is a new energy systems curriculum that crossestraditional course boundaries to teach students that similar energy conversion processes occur inmany different disciplines.Figure 1 shows that the courses in the energy system curriculum appear in a progression, fromintroductory first year courses to career-related courses taken by graduating seniors (4th year). The unifying and integrating theme, whether 1st year materials or 3rd year thermodynamics, ismodules highlighting basic energy conversion processes. Another aspect of Figure 1 is an effortto maintain continuity between the energy conversion modules in different courses by creatingan

heavily involve students and the fact that nograduate students was available in the school to conduct research, integration of the research toteaching was one of the author’s primary objectives in that period. Furthermore, the knowledgestudent gained during courses is to prepare them for solving real world problems when they starttheir career as an engineer. To achieve these two objectives, between fall 2012 and fall 2016, headded a new element, namely research/design project, to most courses that he taught, particularlythermofluid courses. The objective of these research/design projects was to provide students withan opportunity to apply their overall engineering knowledge, especially in the specific topic ofthe course combined with their

goal is to advance thefield of renewable energy by supporting renewable energy programs. Madison College serves asthe lead institution for CREATE, and has developed and delivered various types of facultyprofessional development programs in solar energy for over a decade [18].The need to build a renewable energy educational pipelineA major challenge to educating future renewable energy professionals, is the need to build aneducational pipeline. Since this is an emerging field, many potential young students havelimited knowledge of renewable energy career opportunities, and they lack professional rolemodels. Young adults with an interest in STEM have at least some awareness of what scientists, engineers, and health care professionals do, and many

, senior engineer and consultant. He has taught and developed undergraduate and graduate courses in power electronics, power systems, renewable energy, smart grids, control, electric machines, instrumentation, radar and remote sensing, numerical methods, space and atmosphere physics, and ap- plied physics. His research interests included power system stability, control and protection, renewable energy system analysis, assessment and design, smart microgrids, power electronics and electric machines for non-conventional energy conversion, remote sensing, wave and turbulence, numerical modeling, elec- tromagnetic compatibility and engineering education. During his career Dr. Belu published ten book chapters, several papers

students’ academic careers.IntroductionThere are several studies which detail the benefit of student collaboration and networking [1],[2]. However, there are not always adequate opportunities for students to network andcollaborate with other students and faculty outside of their home institution. Therefore a summerprogram was developed by the FEEDER (Foundations in Engineering Education for DistributedEnergy Resources) Consortium, in hopes to not only increase the ability for students to networkand collaborate, but to expose the students to a wide variety of technologies that they could notsee otherwise. This strengthens several of the soft skills that are very important in thedevelopment of a young engineer’s career, but are often times

of the greatest factors shaping the trajectory of my career and hasprovided incalculable benefits to my education.”“Feedback from industry professionals viewing the project has been very positive with frequentexpressed interest and enthusiasm. The microgrid provides an opportunity to apply real worldindustry knowledge and principals. For that reason, I consider the Microgrid Senior DesignProject a critical component to my future success and believe that other senior design projectsshould provide as much hands-on opportunity to apply industry practices and actual industryhardware as possible.”The fact that the testbed project was selected twice for funding by GridEd/EPRI by itself atteststo the significance and quality of the project. Projectoutcomes were evaluated against ABET learning outcomes summarized in Table 6. Performanceassessment and feedback were done through the evaluation of biweekly submitted reports by thestudent. There were four main categories toward the final GPA of the student: biweekly reports(15%), draft report (10%), final report

concepts using the Azelis line of construction additives and admixes for the mortar and concrete industry. Previously, Jessica worked as the principal scientist for the startup construction consulting company Concrete Process and Science (CPS). Before joining CPS Jessica was the Senior Scientist for CalStar Products a masonry products company specializing in the use of supplementary cementitious materials. Early in her career she performed numerous research projects for the Federal Highway Administration and through the University of Wisconsin-Madison including the use of nanomaterials for use in construction materials. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2018
