when faculty would contact the Global Outreach and ExtendedEducation (GOEE) group to set up the lecture capture portion of their course. Group membersbegan sharing the college’s vision for the future of online education. Over the semesters, interestbegan to build and several faculty started reaching out to discover more about what could bedone to make their courses more online friendly. The initial course to go through the DFO process was Materials Science & Engineering (MSE)598: Concepts in Materials Science. Planning began in the latter part of Fall 2016 and continuedinto the Spring of 2017 when the actual development of digital assets and the building of thecourse in the LMS. The first iteration of the course under this new process was

information, data and science literacy skills that will allow them to succeed in a global economy. c American Society for Engineering Education, 2018Implementing a Graduate Class in Research Data Management for Science/Engineering StudentsIntroduction: Research data management (RDM) is an integral part of engineering and science graduatestudent life, both during graduate school and in their future occupations. Federal agencies, including NSF[1], NIH[2], and USGS[3], are now requiring the submission of a DataManagement Plan (DMP) when submitting proposals for funding. Carlson et al. further advocatefor RDM by stating “… it is not simply enough to teach students about handling data, they mustknow

-source feedback, professional grade trainingtools, and a specially designed development plan, these engineers begin practicing thecompetencies possessed by high-performing, professional engineers. This paper is comprised of two main components. First is a description of the program and therating format was specially designed to reduce common sources of rater-error in subjectivemeasurement. We discuss how behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS) can provide a sharedframe of reference among raters and how we constructed BARS for each of our ninecompetencies. Next, our discussion presents the initial feedback results in two lights. The firstconsults the data as a needs assessment of the piloted cohort. By looking at the competencies ofhighest and

Year 1 and Year 2, the candidates worked to prepare their coursesyllabus, including learning objectives. The program coordinator worked with them to reviewtheir syllabus and answer any lingering questions. Each month during Year 2, the candidates met with the program coordinator to discusschallenges in their courses and suggested plans to address those. It is noted that the programcoordinator often had to remind the candidates that they had been trained in certain areas toaddress the challenges they faced. Thus, these monthly meetings during Year 2 proved veryimportant and became a crucial component of the entire program. At the end of Year 2, the candidates received a college-level certificate for completion of theprogram. During the Spring and

allocated funding suggests a perceivedimportance of the program for increasing the number of students involved in research. One of the goals of many REU programs is to increase the likelihood that involved students willgo on to graduate school in the STEM disciplines. As compared to a matched sample ofundergraduates who did not participate in an REU program, Zydney and colleagues (2002) foundthat participating students had an increased likelihood of attending graduate school and felt thatthe program improved their career trajectories. Similarly, Seymour and colleagues found thatstudents felt that their research experience allowed them to have a clearer picture of their post-graduation plans and felt more prepared for their career or graduate school

hour. The three major sections of theworkshop consisted of the following: (1) the content and structure of the GRE; (2) what a good score is for each portion of the exam; and (3) how to prepare for the test including study plans and materials. The first section gave a brief overview of how the GRE is organized, discussing briefly each ofthe three sections: analytical reasoning, verbal reasoning, and the writing portion. If the studentsdo not understand what the GRE consists of, then the rest of the workshop will not provideadditional benefit for the student. The type of students who attended the first workshop rangedfrom freshman to graduate students, so some students had never previously heard of the GRE,other than that it is

students that they worked with in lab. Table 3 displays the results in order of whichbehaviors were most common. Note that this table includes all participants who participated inthe post-survey, regardless of whether they chose to participate in an interview or not. This wasdone to uncover a more comprehensive picture regarding mentors’ behaviors while mentoring, and because no comparison to the pre-survey was being drawn. The four most commonbehaviors include “sharing the big picture” and goals of the project with the REU student, organizing the research activities for the REU student, modifying the research plan/schedulebased on the student’s progress, and helping the REU student prepare a presentation. of the readings we had ormaybe a class discussion noted well who's job is it if not ours? Moving forward I plan to connectmy thoughts to the practice of research by thinking about how I can change my mind when Iconduct and write about research. Who will be reading my work? How can I make my workmore accessible to individuals who will be mass manufacturing a product I make or maybeindividuals like my parents who are just trying to look out for what is best for their children.Something I want to do the next time I read is to try to continue making these half sheet handoutsfor really interesting papers I read for my research and for my parents. This time around I tookmy time reading through the screentime paper, looking up terms or methods I

Through this program, studentswork closely with their advisor to assess their current abilities and then create personaldevelopment plans. While the student is the focus of the program, the execution of this programdepends heavily on the participation of the students’ advisors for support and guidance. Thisprogram also encourages the advisor to also take an active role in the assessment of their ownskills and development in order to better facilitate the student’s progress. This paper presents the results of an in-depth case study of an advisor engaged in mentoring acohort of

positions them to meet play an importantrole. MEM programs recognize these factors and tailor course offerings, assignments and otheractivities to support these interests among students. When courses are offered, what courses arerequired, part-time versus full-time classes and other options seek to appeal to this professional-minded student. International students approach a U.S. program differently. To move to the U.S. to attend anMEM program, international students must put their careers on hold. Some make this move tobecome marketable to U.S. employers, while others plan to return home with a powerfuldifferentiator among their peers in their domestic job market. How They Choose What encourages students, both U.S. and International, to

students to write, all in a learning community setting. A scarcity ofresources should not prevent an engineering school from providing scientific writing assistanceto graduate students, as they can encourage the growth of a peer learning community.5.2 Future workAs stated earlier, our learning community has been growing and continues to grow organically tomeet the needs expressed by students. Therefore, we plan to continue to develop new ideasarising from student feedback and hope to recruit more and more students, faculty, and staff intothe learning community. In the near future, we intend to develop online toolkits for students to organize and animateactivities on their own. For example, if a group of students would like to organize a
