skills after trauma. They saw evidence that “incorporating the cognitive and perceptual functions of motorperformance with the performance of the actual motor skill will enhance motor learning and tasktransfer.” [8]. These results are promising for the photolithography simulation as a training tool;users of the simulation can practice their motor skills in virtual spaces just like they would beable to in the physical world. The motor skills they gain can then be used in real-worldexperiments.In addition to its uses in entertainment, training, and rehabilitation, VR simulations are beingused as educational tools. A 3D laboratory developed in 2015 with the goal of enticing highschool students into STEM careers saw success in increasing interest and

. Figure 3. IDEAS StagesAfter the proposal is approved, the groups start working in a literature review to develop a betterunderstanding about their research topic. The students then produce an abstract (Figure 3 b),which is submitted online by the deadline, to be peer reviewed by the course’s teachingassistants. The groups prepare their physical model(s) and experimental set-up (Figure 3 c) to betested according to their experiment design (Figure 3d). Once the laboratory results, handcalculations, and simulations are completed, the groups write and submit a paper according to theprovided template and guidelines (Figure 3f). The students also create a poster (examples areprovided) which is presented at the showcase along with the model(s), video(s

topics and training along with professional skills development seemedcritical to the overall benefit of the program.MethodsPrevious reports described the program structure and evaluation results in the program’s firstyear [1]. Briefly, the eight-week long program consisted of four modules: (1) soft lithographyand microfluidics, (2) fabrication (photolithography and electron beam lithography, deposition, and etch), (3) characterization (microscopy and electrical probing), and (4) finance andcommercialization. Mornings were spent doing lessons on content area knowledge andexplaining techniques, and afternoons had hands-on training and laboratory activities. One dayper week and non-training times were devoted to a research project which spanned the

the Electrical and Computer Engineering De- partment at Valparaiso University since August of 2001. He teaches courses in senior design, computer architecture, digital signal processing, freshman topics, and circuits laboratories and is heavily involved in working with students in undergraduate research. Will is also a 2013 recipient of the Illinois-Indiana ASEE Section Outstanding Teacher Award and the 2014 ASEE National Outstanding Teaching Award. Upon coming to Valparaiso University, Will established the Scientific Visualization Laboratory (SVL), a facility dedicated to the use of Virtual Reality (VR) for undergraduate education. Working exclusively with undergraduate students, Will developed VR hardware and

technology programs have sought to establish the correct balance of theory andpractice to maximize student learning. It is often difficult to overcome preconceived notions thatstudents bring with them, such as the comparative speeds at which objects of different weightsfall under the force of gravity [1]. By engaging students through demonstrations, hands-ondesign and fabrication projects, and physical laboratories, misconceptions can be overcome, thusreinforcing the fundamental principles needed in engineering education [2], [3].Eight years ago, the School of Engineering and Technology restructured its undergraduatecurricula to include the PBL core in each program. Each academic year BSEE, BSECET, BSE,and BSET students experience one or more PBL

them to beworthwhile educational experiences through which students achieved specific outcomes. It wasessential to structure the projects with milestones, align with lecture classes and providecontinuous technical support and guidance. This has led to NEET creating a full-time budgetedproject instructor role termed the Lead Laboratory Technical Instructor who in collaboration withthe faculty and other teaching staff, is responsible for tactical execution and operational oversightof all the project-centric aspects of the thread. The outcomes from these mini-workshops arebeing aggregated to create the NEET Projects Handbook. This will help inform design of theprojects that are being planned in the NEET threads during 2018-19.To summarize, the

be the most useful or effective as part of the integratedapproach described previously.Survey DemographicThe survey was administered to the Vantage College APSC students taking a mandatory first-year physical chemistry course covering the basics of material science and thermodynamics(APSC 182), and its associated language course (VANT 140). The language course providedinstruction primarily in the context of writing lab reports as the main communication-relateddeliverable of the program. Over two terms, students perform 10 laboratory experiments inAPSC 182 and must write lab reports for each one. The different tasks assigned to students inVANT 140 were designed to help them develop both general technical communication skills andgenre-specific
