Given the motivations of these two departmentsand mutual interest of the project faculty in bridges, and Conde B. McCullough (Figure 1) inparticular, the faculty identified the potential for a field course to tour important Oregon bridges.Emphasizing those constructed to complete the Oregon coast highway, the course brings thehistory of these bridges together with their design and construction details. GBL has been defined many ways in the literature, but for this study, it will refer to anyapproach that uses a game (digital or hard copy) developed to produce specific educational learningoutcomes. This is slightly different from the term “Serious Games” which generally only refers todigital games where entertainment is not the primary objective [2]. The interest of academics in GBL stems from the fact that youth are playing an increasingnumber of games, with 97% playing at least one hour per day [3]. interdisciplinary experience of the authors and avoid creating silos within differentsections of the course.Future WorkWe argue that CSPs are a promising area for enhancing engineering education and we lookforward to investigating these methods. Future work will focus on identifying appropriateexamples for teaching energy concepts through CSP, developing and offering the course, andmeasuring the impact of CSP on student learning. One of our major challenges will bedetermining how the examples identified in this research can best be integrated to achieve ourdesired learning outcomes. , Sally found the experience more successful. In this project, the labor wasdivided based on skill and ability: one teammate knew how to weld and so could build the devicethey were designing, so the other two (including Sally) conducted research. Sally ended up doingthe majority of the writing as her contribution, and thus the final product was much morecohesive. She also explained that their project received a high grade because of the quality of themachine they built rather than the quality of the report; for that project, she felt that “the writingdefinitely wasn’t emphasized,” and the effect of writing on the overall grade was unclear.Both women were asked to rate their writing skills in connection with their own assessment aswell as a
