have identified thatdesirable attributes of an engineer include good communication skills, high ethical standards, theability and self-confidence to adapt to rapid or major change, the ability to work ininterdisciplinary teams and a profound understanding of the importance of teamwork [4]. In theRIOT team surveys, "Political Skill" (described in the next section) measures these competenciesin the individual differences surveys. We hypothesized that explicitly addressing these "soft topics" before the capstone teams wereformed would increase student awareness of their importance and provide specific tools to helpwith self-management and team cohesion. an introduction to technical areas of study. ENGR 111 and 199 introduceengineering as a profession, historical development, ethics, curricula and engineering careers. The courses also cover introduction to problem analysis and solution, data collection, accuracyand variability. LAs hold recitations each week. ENGR 199 recitations are one hour each. MIME101 and ENGR 111 recitations are two-hours each. LAs did short presentations at the beginning.Students then worked on their task and LAs answered questions if students had any. In the end,LAs summarized the session. These two course also had a history of using undergraduate TAs inrecitations and the LA pedagogy workshop was new. The interactional team typically metweekly.Table 7 presents the

In these two courses, the students are expected to effectively manage their time and teamefforts to produce a finished and workable prototype at engineering standards and expectations. Progressformal reports, written reports and oral presentations constitute integral components of this coursesequence. Before beginning the projects, student teams are provided with adequate training in projectformulation, engineering ethics, management and resource analysis, performance goals and teamexpectations, public presentations of project work, and individual project supervision. Here, at the University of Arizona, the ASEE chapterwas formed on an interdisciplinary model that includes a network of faculty, staff, and studentsfrom several disciplines across the university. The purpose of this cross-college, interdisciplinaryapproach is to promote engineering education at all levels. The mission of the ASEE Chapter atUniversity of Arizona are as follows: 1. To encourage collaboration between engineering undergraduate and graduate students through service, research, and professional development opportunities 2. To encourage and prepare engineering graduate students to pursue careers in academia 3. To increase awareness and understanding of societal, ethical, and public policy

engineeringintersect with one another.Engineering education should be a place where students are able to make connections betweencurrent political discourse, engineering content, and their practice as future engineers. Yet, thepressure to be the upholders of cultural practices in engineering can interrupt the cultivation oftheir emerging identities that integrate politics with engineering. Students should be afforded aspace where they can co-create meaning between their emerging identities and, introspectively, synthesize a transparent view of the ethical role and relationship that engineering has to society. Our work begins to highlight some of the challenges of pushing against the current culture ofengineering and re-politicizing the engineering

Students self-assessed whether theypossessed each skill, making this a binary choice (present/absent) for each member. For ourpurposes in this paper, we narrow our scope to the areas below, which were well covered by sub-topics:Professional Communications Skills  Technical writing (technical summaries, technical descriptions, reports)  Professional writing (emails, memos)  Oral communication

The instructors learned new material from each other as the courseprogressed making it easier to teach the next time with another instructor or subject. An addedbenefit for this team approach was the creation of a network of guests and participants willing toadvocate for a RDM course across campus. Our students, in their post-assessment, mentionedthey would like to learn more about ethical aspects of data management. With the guest speakerapproach and knowing whom to approach on campus, we will be able to include ethicaltreatment of data in future classes. Thus, there is a need to communicate with all stakeholdersand bring units together to keep the overall mission whole rather than each

The Haloeffect describes many of the biases that a professor might bring into a grading session fromgrading previous work [13], [14]. There are other forms of bias that have been reported, whichinclude attachment toward your students, gender, personality, work ethic, and personal bias [11],[14]. One research project focused on investigating 30 professors in the same department thatgraded undergraduate psychology papers. Significant differences were seen in the grading resultsof professors who graded their own class and professors who graded students

For example, Kate explained her normal procedure for hiring anundergraduate: “Usually [undergrads] approach me, say, ‘I’m looking for some research to do,’and I show them around the lab, and if they seem excited about it then I’m more willing to takethem on.” Excitement is not sufficient for selection, because Kate also expects curiosity andacceptable grades, but it is a significant factor. This practice implies a belief that performedinterest correlates with motivation, work ethic, and even ability. Likewise, undergraduatesexplained to me that
