Preparing computing professionals who not only possess knowledge and skills but alsocan make ethical decisions is important. The aim of this research is to investigate how computingmajors reason when it comes to ethical decision-making in a collaborative setting. The data inthis grounded theory research consists of postings of 33 undergraduate computing majors (26males and 7 females) in online discussion forums in response to three ethical scenarios and thecomments they provided on their peers’ responses, along with the follow up interviews. Findingssuggest that students’ decisions are highly influenced by the specifics of situation, the nature ofthe moral issue, and whether they can connect the situation to a real-world story. Weldon School of BME, thecurriculum utilizes the engineering design process to guide students through three (3) differentmodules covering different Biotransport phenomena (diffusivity, mass transport, and heattransfer). Students are required to research, conceptualize, and generate hypotheses around amodule prompt. These characteristics become thecriteria they later use for peer assessment.Over the course of many workshops in several years, we have collected these lists from hundredsof groups and have begun analyzing them for common patterns. ?Three distinct phases of a woman’s journey were examined. First, a sample of women who havealready completed an undergraduate engineering degree from a public university was studied.Secondly, women in their upper division year of their undergraduate degree program were askedto reflect on their experiences over their undergraduate career. Maryland’s PROMISE AGEP,LSAMP, and LSAMP-BD delegations demonstrated a clear need to assist the global community.They were particularly interested in working on problems related to industry innovation,infrastructure, gender equality, sustainable cities, and communities. Students realized thatapproaches to solutions could not be centralized to their own country, and that their proposalshad to be feasible and logical for other parts of the world. As an example, challenges withbringing clean water to remote regions and approaches to sanitation required a need to take timeto learn from peers from other countries.
