master’sprogram have considered it to be a “Data Science” program. Indeed, much the same way that anengineer applies math and science to solve problems, a Data Scientist applies statistics and otherdata analysis techniques to solve problems.A Data Scientist uses more sophisticated computational tools than a Data or Business Analyst.Further, Data Scientists are typically expected to find patterns rather than answer a specificstated question. Although the goal is still to solve or address a real-world problem (e.g., bestpredict an outcome), it is easy for students to overlook that. We have found that students doingtheir capstone project are often hoping to obtain data that best shows off their skills, withoutregard to data quality or even meaning, much

]. Recognizing the important role standards play for society and industries, the United StatesStandards Strategy (USSS) identified standards education as a high priority for academia, industry, and government and stimulated the development of multiple educational initiatives [4].The ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) has mandated involvement ofacademic engineering programs in standards education by adding the requirement to usestandards for capstone projects to the criteria for accreditation [5].Standards developing organizations (SDO) are active in producing educational materials varyingfrom videos, to online tutorials, to case studies. For example, ANSI has created online tutorialsand case studies. IEEE developed Standards University that

Engineering senior lab course. The objective of this research project wasto determine if, and to what extent, integrating information fluency instruction pertaining to theethical use of images into engineering lab sessions improves the quality of information fluencyskills demonstrated in student presentations. A rubric was used to assess the use of images instudent presentations for two criteria: 1) attribution and 2) use of images that have appropriateCreative Commons license, have public domain status, or are original creations. Studentscompleted an initial lab presentation early in the semester with no information fluencyinstruction. Students then received direct in-person instruction in the ethical use of imagery froma librarian specifically

getting an assignment in a core course at the sophomore level and juniorlevel and senior level, and usually at the senior capstone course.[I4]” Build up IL skills gradually from more generic skills to more discipline-specific bysenior yearFuture StepsSome of the results from the five interviews are informing the creation of information literacymodules for freshman engineers and students in a senior engineering design class. These moduleswill incorporate advice from the interviews of teaching ILI throughout students’ careers, as bothfreshmen and seniors will be the audience of the video modules. Also, the videos build on the ideaof having a strong relationship with faculty as two engineering faculty members created the videosfor the freshman
