These writing assignments asked students to not only explain the causes of the Flint WaterCrisis, but also to propose strategies to prevent another crisis like the one experienced in Flint.Lastly, to provide a sense of community, the problem sets were solved in pre-assigned studentgroups and writing assignments underwent a process of peer-review.Integrating teaching-as-research, learning communities, and learning-through-diversity.Teaching-as-research was used to develop this report. Throughout this report, we aim todetermine if our intervention (a Flint Water Crisis case study) benefited student learning. Aprior study of the Rosetta Commons, a multi-campus computational biology REU, found itmatched outcomes for community, scientific identity, scientific self-efficacy, and intention topursue a science research-related career when compared to two single-campus life

guided discussions aboutsustainable electronics, each participant’s research progress, and connecting the research processto science standards and curricula. These guided discussions provided an important opportunityfor peer mentoring (teacher participants providing some mentoring for each other), as well asmentoring from the program directors at Purdue University and Tuskegee University. The guideddiscussion occurred via teleconference between teachers on the two university campuses. Thesementoring activities supplemented the research specific mentoring from faculty and graduatestudents. At the end of the program, teachers prepared a technical report, detailing their researchfindings and proposed curricula, and also made oral
