when STEM careers are set to grow by 12.6%over the next 10 years, 5.2% faster than other occupations (Burke, 2019).Additionally, STEM is facing a diversity crisis with a lack of representation from women andsome races. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women make up only 15.9% of the totalengineering and architecture workforce (Employed Persons by Detailed Occupation, Sex, Race,and Hispanic or Latino Ethnicity, 2019). This creates an issue, as STEM peer contact correlateswith STEM retention among females (Hilts, Part & Bernacki, 2018). Further, according to theBureau of Labor Statistics, whites make up 79.3% percent of the total engineering andarchitecture workforce (Employed Persons by Detailed Occupation, 2019). Minorities

Participants in the 2019 program were seven CPS teachers,including three males and four females, with a range of teaching experience from 1 to 17 years(average 5.6 years). The teacher fellows included two Asian, 2 Black, 2 White and 1 teacher whochose not to respond. At the conclusion of each week of the program, teacher fellows completed a survey inQualtrics to evaluate their weekly experience in their research lab and educational workshop. (ASEE) published a special education researchproject dedicated to retention related issues of engineering students in 2012 [1, 2]. This ASEEretention project collectively invited around 60 universities to share their perceptions on thistopic and, specifically, asked for a focus on exploring the best practices and strategies forretaining students in Engineering, Engineering Technology and Computing programs [1, 2]. Themain focus of this study is to find the reasons why 40 to 50% of engineering freshmen had eitherswitched or withdrawn from the engineering major. The study indicated that it is mainly due topoor teaching and advising, difficulty of the engineering curriculum, and lack of “belonging”within engineering [2, 3]. Furthermore, these

They met with the Institutestaff and interacted with the student participants.Enhancement ProgramThe Enhancement Program activities addressed land, air and water transportation systems. Theactivities included hands-on components and field trips. The following areas were covered:Land TransportationHighways – Road ConstructionThe students were introduced to highway and bridge construction with highlights of studentsperforming the Standard Proctor Test, which is used to control the strength of road bases, andmeasuring elevation using the automatic level.
