lab and met faculty and graduate students in the department. The programculminated in a Hackathon where teams of up to five students developed an application of theirchoosing and then presented their product to other students and three judges (the professorleading the program, a teaching assistant, and the institution’s chief software engineer). Havingannounced the Hackathon at the end of the day prior to the competition, the lead professor notedthat students had – without prompting – self-selected their own teams by the start of the nextsession that essentially divided students into all-male teams and teams of women with one malestudent. Interestingly, the two teams of mostly women took first and second place, the latter ofwhich consisted of

completed. Accordingly, since the scale changed over different years, we are unable toinfer exactly which each student used when completing their exam. Going forward, it would bevaluable to collect this information and also to adjust the method for imputing these. These research findings have important implications for computing students, and in understandingwhat qualities and characteristics before and during students’ academic careers are the mostimportant. Based on our work, cumulative GPA is critical, and a student’s SAT math score andcomprehensive ACT score may also play a pivotal role in predicting students’ graduation from acomputing field. Therefore, considering these rankings could prove beneficial to academicadministrators, faculty, and

teaching CSECcurriculum, is balancing the need for learners to have not only the knowledge, but also the skillsand abilities [13]. To address this problem, we can turn to competency-based education (CBE)[8], [13]. CBE is not a new pedagogical concept. It has a relatively long history in K-12education and higher education [14], [15]. According to Geravis, 2016, CBE can trace its originsin US education back to the Morill Land-Acts of 1862 and the notion of applied education.CBE focuses on having students demonstrate the mastery and application of knowledge andskills beyond the confines of the classroom (i.e., in the real world). CBE is also known asoutcomes or problem-based learning [16]. The goal of CBE is to better balance the expectationsand

technology appropriately, solving technical issuessafely, and focusing on the process along the way.Exploring network switching and routing can be facilitated using the elements and the principlesof graphic design. The strategic use of icons, symbols, color, scale, proximity, contrast, groupings, hierarchy, alignment, repetition, balance, along with text annotations in diagrams ortables as part of Boardnotes 2.0, aims to do just that. The repeated usage of these elementsencourages students to develop a visual vocabulary of the subject, using both standardized andself-developed graphics as a way for firming up ones understanding about a topic. Boardnotes2.0 refers to the thoughtful use of selected graphical design elements and principles

job candidate obtains a position in computing, a number of issues still remain.Computing graduates report that the greatest challenges they face in the workplace are related towork-life balance, the cost of living, a lack of diversity, and role-related stress [3]. Historically, hiring has undergone several changes to make workplaces more equitable. The Civil Rights Actin 1964 was a first step to banning discrimination due to an individual’s race, religion, gender, ornationality [5]. In addition, Executive Order 11246 extended non-discriminatory practices to therealm of hiring/employment. However, just because the discrimination in hiring may be illegaldoes not necessarily translate to a guarantee of a diverse workforce. Particularly in
