artifacts.Intro to aerospace engineering – Parachute selection problemThe concept map for a parachute selection problem (Appendix I) is shown in Figure 1. Thisproblem is designed for second-year aerospace engineering students, which students work on overa three-week period. The problem statement provides information about the rocket’s apogeealtitude, information about the drogue parachute used to slow the rocket for payload deployment, the altitude of the payload deployment, and the payload’s weight. Students are also provided withrequirements specifying maximum kinetic energy at landing, maximum recovery area, andmaximum descent time. These requirements come from the NASA Student Launch Competitionfrom which this problem was derived. Students are tasked

Students self-reported their race, gender, class year, and major on the survey. Studentresponses will not be separated by demographic to protect their confidentiality. Of the 22students that participated in the survey, 12 identified as female and 9 as male, 14 identified asWhite/Caucasian, and 5 as Black/African American. Two students identified with multiple racialbackgrounds. About half of students (13) reported they were Material Sciences and Engineeringand/or Mechanical Engineering majors. We used a national cohort that included multipleengineering disciplines (biomedical, mechanical, chemical, electrical, computer, aerospace),types of formal design projects (e.g., first-year, design-spine, senior capstone) and institutiontypes, including private religious; Hispanic-serving; public land-grant; and research flagshipinstitutions (N=449). We report sample characteristics and used confirmatory factor analysis(CFA) to provide validity evidence, reporting the chi-square and standardized root mean squareresidual as estimates of fit. We report Cronbach’s alpha as a measure of internal consistency. We found that overall, the CFA aligned with
