He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at The Ohio State University in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 1985. He obtained a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering at Wright State University in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering at the Air Force Institute of Technology.
