, national organizations have called for broadening of graduate education beyondthe technical to include career development and professional skills training [4-6]. The impetus isthat traditional graduate degrees prepare students to become professors and researchers ateducational institutions while career outcome studies show that those with engineering graduatedegrees find employment in a wide range of industries such as healthcare, banking, aerospace, consulting and manufacturing [5, 7, 8]. In Canada only 14% of engineers with PhDs (includingarchitecture and related technologies) are employed as professors [4].There is a need to provide leadership-learning opportunities to engineering students as leadershipcompetencies can boost their success in

math, chemistry, and physics courses. Most students gothrough an entrance-to-major process during the fourth semester and enter a specific Engineeringmajor (e.g., aerospace, chemical, mechanical) during the fall semester of the junior year. At thetime of this analysis, Cohorts 1 and 2 but not Cohort 3 had gone through the entrance to majorprocess. Cohorts 1 and 2 are in their senior and junior years, respectively. Table 5 showsretention by type of major and whether a student left the University. For the students in Cohorts1 and 2, 88 of the Engineering Ahead participants became STEM majors, whereas 77 of thecomparison students did. More students in the comparison sample left the University foracademic reasons (29, e.g., GPA < 2.0) compared

broadening participation.Diversity of EngineeringOne of our program objectives is to highlight the diversity of engineering for the campparticipants. By highlighting the diversity of engineering, we intend to expose students to avariety of industries engineers engage with to demonstrate how engineering can be connected totheir interests. As a result, we want students to understand that engineering occurs beyond thestereotypical industries (e.g. automotive or aerospace). To support this goal, we use severaldesign elements. First, we hire a staff from a variety of engineering backgrounds. On the firstday of camp, we engage in staff introductions that include the staffs discipline expertise andshort summary of their future career goals. Next, we

While interesting, theseresults failed to provide information on the common ways that faculty integrated SJ issues intotheir teaching practices.Research QuestionsThe questions explored in this study are: How
