introductory design course in the Mechatronics Engineering curriculum. Thedevelopment and structure of the curricular hackathon activity is described in the next section.3 Overview of Activity Design“Audio engineering” was chosen as the problem space for this event because the developers ofthis activity felt that exploring music would be of interest to students. This event began as a shortpilot activity in fall 2022 before being expanded into a two-day-long course activity in fall 2023and 2024. The activity has also been offered as part of a series of extra-curricular workshops(held at various times in 2023 and 2024) for students in the Faculties of Engineering andMathematics (Math). The overall development of the activity closely mirrored the

Do motivations for going into engineering studies and self-identity as an engineer-in- training vary between engineering majors? 3. Do career motivations and preferences for certain “employment trajectories” vary between engineering majors? We hypothesize that the answers to these questions are “yes” and that this study's results willhelp to illustrate how they differ, and how they are similar.MethodsA survey was designed in late 2022 at the University of Saskatchewan, and minor variants weredeveloped at five other Canadian schools: the University of British Columbia, the University ofWaterloo, Queen’s University, McGill University, and the
