Institutional Setting and Program IllustrationFollowing a 2016 curriculum revision, the CBE Department at CSM has provided a new requiredsophomore-level course: Computational Methods in Chemical Engineering (CMCE), which isoffered simultaneously with MEB as a corequisite. The main instructional goals of the CMCEcourse are to provide students with exposure to the computational tools used throughout the latercurriculum in course projects and assignment calculations, as well as to provide limitedinstruction on programming techniques (flowsheet generation and coding), a dedicated course forwhich had been absent in the curriculum since 2002

Thecurrent work aims to address all of these shortcomings via the development and implementationof an incident reporting structure that focuses on hazard identification and risk assessment. The project has several overarching goals: 1. To teach students about risk assessment 2. To have students practice hazard identification and reporting of good safety practices, near misses, and incidents 3. To quantitatively benchmark the hazards and frequencies of events in the lab courses so targeted improvements can be made in the courses’ overall safety 4. ]. Additionally, this strong interest inbiomaterials is reflected economically. In 2019, the global market for biomaterials was estimatedto be worth $106.5 billion, and revenues from biomaterials are projected to increase to $348.4billion by 2027 [5]. To ensure these societal and economic demands for novel biomaterials aremet, we must prioritize educating diverse students about designing, engineering, and testingbiomaterials [6], [7].One way to meet this goal is through K-12 outreach. Outreach is an important activity forincreasing the number of students studying science, technology, engineering, and mathematics(STEM) at the university level [8], [9]. This is especially important for increasing therepresentation of individuals who are traditionally

asengineering, defined as accountable disciplinary knowledge (ADK) [6], change over the courseof an undergraduate education and entry into an engineering profession. In the first years of anundergraduate engineering degree program, introductory classes often focus on textbookproblems, larger lectures, and individual written exams. The ability to produce specificnumerical results to written problems is therefore ADK. In later years, ADK increasingly shiftstowards teamwork, communication skills, research, and collection and analysis of data. Coursesbecome more project-based and assignments have longer timelines with more open-endedsolutions. For students this shift in ADK can be a source of frustration or anxiety, as theyexperience a misalignment between

other hand, they report that innovative instruction can lead toimprovements in student beliefs. A project based design (graphic, industrial, interiorphotographic and fashion) curriculum, and a business curriculum promoting self reflection bothresulted in statistically significant increases in deep approach scores as measured by the SPQ.Although conventional lecture-based educational practices tend to reinforce more naive beliefs, innovative instruction can develop more expert-like beliefs, which in turn can promote learning.Over the last four years, the WISE Learning Tool has become an increasingly integralcomponent of the Chemical, Biological and Environmental Engineering (CBEE) curriculum atOSU, and has been integrated into the three courses

typically done outside of the classroom anyway (homework, projects, classpreparation assignments, etc.), this concern is not specific to online courses. For exams andquizzes, one can potentially be even more confident in an online environment than in a F2Fenvironment that the work credited to a given student is their own. This can require significantresources, if one chooses the policing route, but is possible as outlined below. Alternatively, onecould take the approach of designing quizzes and tests that allow students to use a broader arrayof resources (internet, book, notes, maybe even each other, etc.) to minimize the monitoringrequirements. This second option also comes closer to mimicking what students will be asked todo “in the real world
