engineering. Theengineering overview is divided into four sections (each half of a 15 week semester). Thefirst section is general to all students, and establishes some basic vocabulary andengineering concepts(1). The next two sections, the students select from eight different“mini-projects” on topics such as Artificial Kidney Design(2), Biomass Conversion toFuels and Absorption of Wastewater Contaminants. These “mini- projects” are project-based multi-disciplinary design experiences. survey of United States chemical engineering curricula shows that a relatively small number ofdepartments offer their first-year students a laboratory experience focused on core chemicalengineering concepts using hands-on design projects. Furthermore, the first-year chemistry andphysics laboratories taken by engineering students do not typically ask them to exercise the typeof creativity that attracted students to engineering in the first place.In order to bring more active, collaborative, and hands-on learning into our curriculum, wecreated a freshman chemical engineering design course and laboratory. In this paper, wepresent two strategies for using the study of artificial organs in chemical engineeringcourses at Rowan University.The first strategy promotes self-guided discovery and design through a semester-longproject. This strategy has been implemented into a graduate and senior level electivecourse called Biomedical Engineering Processes at Rowan University. We chose the Katzenbach and Smith teamworkframework, and the related teamwork performance framework developed by Davis and Ulseth(2013), to evaluate ChemE Car teamwork. The factors investigated includevarious topics such as how candidates are identified, factors considered most important whenselecting an undergraduate, defining a project for an undergraduate and assessing theundergraduate. Forty eight individuals, the majority of whom where professors (88%) atresearch institutions (56%), responded to the survey. Although there were not any statisticallysignificant conclusions, the results suggest that (1) having a formal application procedure, (2)choosing undergraduates based on conceptual understanding and (3) assessing undergraduatesbased largely on critical thinking lead to more undergraduates attending graduate school
