The sequence starts with basic Statics, which can only be taken after thecompletion of the freshman year. of the systems thinking module were positive. Most students wrotethat before the module, they did not know much about systems thinking. After the module, theyknew much more and appreciated the number and diversity of issues that must be considered in asuccessful engineering project. Most also indicated that the module changed the way they viewengineering. Just over half said that systems thinking will help them to plan a project, and a thirdappreciated having tools to represent the system and its behavior graphically. been placed ondeveloping project planning skills, building models, analyzing data, technical writing, classroompresentations, and, in three cases, presentations at an undergraduate research symposium.Analyzing students’ responses from the pre-survey and post-survey proved the methodology wassuccessful in improving the ease of learning the subject matter. In addition, all students whowere involved in PBL methodology passed the course; the overall grade point average andmedian was higher than that for the control class that did not use PBL methodology. laboratory sessions were used to discuss case-based learning studies and otherlaboratory sessions provided the students with a hands-on approach to geotechnical methodsemployed in the industry for subsurface investigation and laboratory testing. Students were partof a subsurface investigation using Bucknell’s drilling rig in which they planned, obtained fieldsamples, and performed laboratory testing necessary for design. These efforts provided themeans for discussion of the laboratory modules for sub-surface sampling, and pertinentlaboratory testing. Students also used the laboratory section to participate in a design andconstruction of sheet pile walls, similar to the ASCE regional and national GeoWallcompetitions. or non-use of a reference data card (RDC).The following sections describe the methods used by the authors to evaluate each of the areas.Evaluating PerformancePerformance was evaluated by comparing students’ mean scores on both within-term and finalexaminations from the fall term of 2010 (Term 11-1) for ten sections of students (n=184), all ofwhom were provided an RDC with similar examination data from 11 sections of students(n=201) that were not provided an RDC in the fall of 2011 (Term 12-1). The mean scores wereevaluated using a two-sample t-test assuming unequal variances.
