differences between groups.This paper reports the outcomes of using the Sustainable Design Rubric as a formativeassessment in a civil engineering capstone design course at a regional, teaching-focusedinstitution in the Southeast. The assignment was given to 35 students across 7 teams. First,students individually scored their projects for a subset of the criteria - teams divided up criteriaamongst their members so that at least two people would score each criterion. Next, studentsdiscussed their individual responses with team members to arrive at a set of consensus scores,with written justifications, for all 14 criteria. The primary goal of the freshman program is to improve 1st-year to 2nd-year retention across the College. As a result, there are no civil engineering courses offered to first-year students. . Lessons learned from failures have substantiallyaffected civil engineering practice. For the student, study of these cases can help place designand analysis procedures into historical context and reinforce the necessity of life-long learning.Three approaches for bringing forensics and failure case studies into the civil engineeringcurriculum are possible. These are stand-alone forensic engineering or failure case studycourses, capstone design projects, and integration of case studies into the curriculum. As the summer progresses, the students takeover day-to-day management of the projects. To ensure that all the students are engaged in theresearch and understand its goals and challenges, weekly meetings are held to discuss progress,difficulties and preliminary results. Keeping the work fun and exciting, while granting thestudents control of the research process, encourages the students to pursue graduate study. CE492 serves as a “capstone”experience or one in which students are faced with a multi-disciplinary design projectincorporating facets from all previous civil engineering courses. Previous capstone experienceshave required students to design structures planned for construction or currently underconstruction at the Academy, thus providing an opportunity for site visitations and activeparticipation with key players in the project development process.
